The S&P 500 has spent much of the year under scrutiny as elevated valuations and signs of overextension fueled expectations of a market correction.
After the index broke through 7,000 for the first time and kept climbing to new records, those fears intensified across financial media.
The S&P 500 Shiller cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio has climbed above 40 for only the second time in history, following the late-1990s tech boom, according to Robert Shiller's dataset tracked at Multpl.
Bank of America's July 2026 Global Fund Manager Survey found that 43% of global fund managers believe artificial intelligence (AI) stocks are in bubble territory, though a slightly larger share, 48%, said they are not, Seeking Alpha reported.
A new midyear equity **** ysis from Putnam Investments reframes the conversation around what extended rallies and periodic selloffs mean for your long-term returns.

After years of record-breaking growth, major market indexes are stagnating. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) is down 0.42% over the past month, as of this writing, while the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) has sunk by nearly 2% in that time.
Some market indicators are also raising red flags over valuations. The S&P 500 Shiller CAPE Ratio, for instance, is the highest it's been since the dot-com bubble, suggesting the index is trading at a premium. The Buffett indicator is also at a record high of 236%. For context, Warren Buffett himself noted that when this indicator nears 200%, investors are "playing with fire."

Now, this doesn't mean that a bear market is around the corner. But downturns are a normal part of the market's cycle, so it's not a matter of if we face a pullback, but when. Here's my number one piece of advice about how to prepare right now.
Volatility could be looming, but a century's worth of history proves one thing: The investors who win out are those who stay invested for the long haul.

It's a new era for Florida football as Jon Sumrall now has the reins in Gainesville.
While the coaching staff is new and many are anxiously awaiting to see if the program can return to the upper echelon of the SEC, the Gators continue to recruit with the best of them. As of July 23, Florida has the No. 7 class in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
The haul features 26 total commits, 17 of whom are blue-chippers. The class headliner is the nation's No. 2 overall prospect.
Coatesville (Pa.) Five-Star Plus+ interior offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller whittled his list of top schools down quick and that led him to an April commitment. UF picked up the momentum and ultimately beat out Ohio State, Alabama and Tennessee.
He's the lone five-star in the class and one of two top-100 commits, alongside Port Charlotte (Fla.) four-star wide receiver Elias Pearl. Hiller also highlights one of the nation's best OL classes.

TORONTO (AP) — Daniel Alfredsson, once public enemy No. 1 in Toronto as captain of the Ottawa Senators, is leaving Canada's capital to join the Maple Leafs as an ****** ociate coach.
The Maple Leafs announced the move Tuesday, saying John Gruden and Brad Werenka also are joining coach Jim Hiller’s staff as ****** istants.
Alfredsson, 53, spent the last three seasons as an ****** istant in Ottawa after a Hall of Fame playing career spent mostly with the Senators.
The Swedish winger was a prominent figure in the “Battle of Ontario” between the Maple Leafs and Senators, which included four playoff showdowns between 2000 and 2004.
Senators owner Michael Andlauer in a statement said that while he wished Alfredsson were not joining a rival organization, the door would always be open for a return.

Maple Leafs free agency tracker: Live signings, trades, news, updates and more in 2026 NHL offseason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
This is a pivotal offseason for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Coming off a brutal 2025-26 campaign, they earned the No. 1 pick (Gavin McKenna), hired a new GM and head coach (John Chayka, Jim Hiller) and have already made a fascinating sign-and-trade for Darren Raddysh.
The opening of NHL free agency on July 1 provides more opportunities for the Leafs to turn this thing back in the right direction.
Last summer's biggest storyline was the loss of Mitch Marner.

The S&P 500 has delivered strong gains over the past several years. Artificial intelligence remains a dominant investment theme, and stock valuations have climbed well above historical averages. Whenever markets reach these levels, discussions about an impending crash tend to follow -- and with good reason.
Indeed, history offers a useful perspective.

One of the most widely followed valuation measures is the Shiller P/E CAPE ratio, which compares stock prices to average inflation-adjusted earnings over the previous 10 years. Historically, elevated CAPE ratios have been **** ociated with lower long-term returns and, in some cases, major market corrections. And today, the CAPE ratio remains elevated.
That doesn't mean a crash is imminent, though.

LONDON (AP) — When Serena Williams played her first professional tennis match in nearly four years recently, another elite female athlete in her 40s was on hand for the occasion.
Skier Lindsey Vonn has a special understanding of what Williams is going through as she prepares to play both singles and doubles at Wimbledon at age 44.
After making her own comeback, Vonn was the top World Cup downhiller last season at age 41 until her horrific crash at the Milan Cortina Olympics in February left her with a severely fractured left leg.
“There is an increasing shift in what women can accomplish at later stages in their careers or life,” Vonn told The ******* ociated Press. “I feel like we are in the same boat, where we don’t need to prove anything to anyone but we still have the ability to compete at an elite level. She (Willliams) also told me that I played a role in inspiring her to come back so that of course was meaningful to me.”
Vonn talked with Williams after the tennis standout’s doubles victory with partner Victoria Mboko at Queen’s Club in London, having watched the match from one of the VIP balconies.

Over the past decade, the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has delivered a phenomenal total return of around 250%, compounding at roughly 13.4% annually. Over the last year alone, the stock market, driven by developments in artificial intelligence (AI), has surged almost 23%, with its ferocity drawing comparison to some of the strongest bull runs in market history.
That's less reassuring than it sounds.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
The stock market is currently trading near its most expensive valuation ever. That's not an exaggeration. The last time the market was this richly valued, it was in the months preceding one of the ugliest crashes Wall Street has ever seen -- the dot-com debacle of the early 2000s.
What do I mean by "richly valued"? In simplest terms, today's investors are paying more for each dollar of corporate earnings than at almost any point in history. One way to measure that is the Shiller CAPE ratio, which compares the current price of an index (like the S&P 500) to inflation-adjusted earnings over the previous 10 years.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Peter Laviolette will be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The ***** ociated Press on Monday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Kings hadn't yet announced the results of their lengthy search for a permanent replacement for interim coach D.J. Smith, who replaced Jim Hiller in March.
The 61-year-old Laviolette is expected to get a three-year contract to take over his seventh NHL team. The Kings have made the playoffs in five consecutive seasons, but they've also endured five straight first-round exits under three head coaches and two general managers.
Laviolette is returning to the NHL after being fired by the New York Rangers in April 2025. He has also led the New York Islanders, Carolina, Philadelphia, Nashville and Washington during a 23-year head coaching career highlighted by a Stanley Cup championship with the Hurricanes in 2006.
Laviolette's teams have reached the postseason in 11 of the past 14 seasons he finished behind a bench, and he also led the Flyers (2010) and the Predators (2017) to the Stanley Cup Final. His 1,594 career games coached are the ninth most in NHL history.
