SPAXX tracks T-bill yields near 4% but its 0.42% expense ratio ranks among the highest in its money market peer group.
VMFXX runs historically cheaper than SPAXX, and FDLXX delivers state-tax advantages, giving cost-focused investors two direct upgrades to consider.

If you have a Fidelity brokerage account, there is a good chance your uninvested cash is already sitting in Fidelity Government Money Market Fund (NASDAQ:SPAXX) and you have never given it a second thought. Fidelity parks uninvested cash in SPAXX by default, and most investors never look. That is fine for a while. It becomes expensive the moment short rates start moving and you do not notice.
SPAXX is a government money market mutual fund run by Fidelity that holds short-term U.S. government securities, Treasury repurchase agreements, and cash. Its job is simple: preserve $1 per share, pay interest daily, and stay liquid. It sits inside the Fidelity Hereford Street Trust and doubles as the core position, meaning it is where trade proceeds, dividends, and deposits land automatically until you invest them.

A business case for phase one of the Hereford bypass has claimed congestion in parts of the city could fall by up to 25%.
It also said journey times between the city centre and Rotherwas could reduce by an average of six-and-a-half-minutes.
Herefordshire Council decided to publish the full document ahead of work starting on the route, which will link the A49 and A465 south of the city.
Councillor Philip Price, cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, said: "One of the reasons we have produced a detailed business case is to demonstrate that the scheme represents good value for money."
About £45m has been put aside for the bypass, which will create an alternative route for vehicles to travel around the city.

A fundraising weekend has kicked off in memory of 20-year-old cricketer Josh Baker, who died suddenly in 2024.
For the second year running, Blue for Bakes is being hosted at Worcestershire County Cricket Club, starting at New Road as the Men's Rapids take on Middlesex.
The weekend will culminate at Astwood Bank Cricket Club on Sunday as the Women's Rapids take on Kent at the Josh Baker Oval.
"It's humbling," Josh's father, Paul Baker, told BBC Hereford and Worcester, adding: "It seems to be bigger and better than last year so we're nervously looking forward to the weekend."
Visitors are encouraged to wear blue in tribute to Josh.

The rising sun bathes the rolling Herefordshire hillsides in a warm glow as birds gently chirp and sheep graze in the fields.
But this rural idyll is shattered by the sound of explosions, followed by plumes of smoke and ear-splitting screams.
Six camouflaged men rush to the scene to find a soldier howling for help as he clutches his bloodied leg, half of which appears to have been blown off.
Thankfully, the blood is fake and this is an actor - albeit a former soldier and amputee - and the first responders are a group of football coaches studying for their Uefa Pro Licence, the sport's highest coaching qualification.
Former **** nal midfielder and Wales captain Aaron Ramsey applies a tourniquet, while ex-Chelsea and Argentina goalkeeper Willy Caballero comforts the casualty.

Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson says there is "plenty more to come" from left-arm spinner Fateh Singh, following his career-best bowling figures that helped the Pears seal a thrilling five-wicket win over Gloucestershire.
In only this fourth first-class match, and third for Worcestershire, the 22-year-old took 5-74 to crack open the Gloucestershire second innings as the visitors slipped from 81-1 to 166-9 and were eventually dismissed for 185.
That left the Pears 87 to win on the final afternoon, which they reached, after a slight wobble, for the loss of five wickets.
Richardson said Singh's personal milestone was "brilliant" and added he was impressed he made the most of a helpful, final-day pitch at New Road.
"I think there's plenty more to come from him," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester.
