Newcastle United defender Alex Murphy will spend the 2026/27 campaign on loan in the German second tier.
Murphy has been slowly blooded into the Newcastle first team since his arrival from Galway United in 2022. After spending the 2024/25 season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, the Republic of Ireland youth international played six times for the Magpies last season.
Now, the 22-year-old has joined FC Kaiserslautern for the current campaign to get more regular game time.
"I'm very happy to be here," Murphy said about the move.
"FC Kaiserslautern is a great club, and I can't wait to play my first game in this incredible stadium. I want to take the next steps in my development here and be as successful as possible with the team this season."

Goals proved decisive as Kerry's quest for back-to-back All-Ireland SFC ***** les remains on course with a 2-18 to 0-20 victory over Dublin in Sunday's semi-final.
In scorching heat at Croke Park, Jack O'Connor's men did enough to get past a stern Dublin, who will reflect on a day where they were close to upsetting the odds, but 12 wides and two goal chances of their own passed up cost them.
It was the first championship meeting between the old rivals since Dublin won the 2023 All- Ireland final and while Ger Brennan's men have enjoyed a relatively productive campaign with wins over Donegal and Galway, the Kingdom remained a step ahead.
While David Clifford was held quiet for long spells, the Fossa man still ended up with 1-6 to his name as Kerry found a way to get him on the ball, but older brother Paudie pulled the strings with five points of his own.
For Dublin, Con O'Callaghan was well contained, but Cormac Costello and Colm Basquel stepped up, but they needed more on the day as Kerry will now face Mayo in the final on Sunday, 26 July.

Galway manager Micheal Donoghue said he had "100 percent belief" his team would reach this year's All-Ireland hurling final.
The Leinster champions produced a huge display to score an emphatic win over Cork in Saturday's semi-final and now have a final against either Limerick or Clare to look forward to on 19 July.
While Cork entered the game as favourites to progress to a third-straight final, Saturday's defeat had overtones from their defeat by Tipperary in last year's decider as they found themselves in a deep hole they couldn't find a way out of.
Galway opened brightly, narrowed the gap to one at the break before outscoring the Rebels 1-14 to 0-5 in the second period as they got it tactically perfect and took complete control.
While their Leinster final victory over Dublin in June highlighted their ability to deliver a top performance, some questioned whether they could produce the same again Cork, but Donoghue had no doubt.

Dublin staged a stirring second-half comeback to beat Galway 1-25 to 1-21 in a Croke Park thriller and reach the All-Ireland semi-finals.
Con O'Callaghan hit 1-6 for the Dubs, including a second-half penalty after Liam Silke was black-carded for a foul on Colm Basquel which swung momentum in the closing stages.
Galway appeared on course for victory after John Maher's goal 15 minutes from time put them 1-20 to 0-17 in front.
But Ger Brennan's Dublin - who outlasted Donegal in extra-time last week to reach the last eight - ate into the deficit and finished with a flourish to return to the last four for the first time since 2023.
Dublin will now face defending All-Ireland champions Kerry on the weekend of 11-12 July for a spot in this year's final, while Louth will play Mayo in the other semi-final.

Friday’s announcement came as no surprise to anyone, but it was still a thrill to learn that the long-held dream of Ireland’s Katie Taylor would be fulfilled to close out her boxing career at home in Dublin on September 5.
Taylor had long expressed her goal of concluding her career as Ireland’s greatest athlete by defending her ***** les at Croke Park, a historic venue seating 80,000 people and home to the Gaelic Athletic ***** ociation. It will be the first boxing event at Croke Park since Muhammad Ali fought Alvin Lewis of Detroit in 1972.
Taylor’s opponent is her newly minted mandatory challenger for the vacant WBC World Super Lightweight, Flora Pili of France (12-0, 2 KOs). Although many women threw their names into the hat as Taylor’s final opponent, including Stephanie Han, Holly Holm, and Caroline Dubois, this was never meant to be a trial by fire.
It is designed to provide Taylor with a credible opponent, sharp enough to help promote the fight and share the ring, while tipping the scales as much as possible to ensure Taylor earns herself the fairy-tale ending to a storybook career.
The 2012 London Olympics gold medalist and two-division champion Taylor of Bray, Ireland (25-1, 6 KOs) began a four-day promotional tour with Friday’s news conference, then moving on to her hometown of Bray, County Wicklow, and on to Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Belfast in Northern Ireland.

How is the weather today in Galway?

What a day. The weather was great, but from early on, you could sense the crowd was huge. For any sport to attract over 42,000 on a Friday afternoon shows that it can be done.
