OSLO, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Norwegian authorities have seized a Russian cruise ship in the Arctic on behalf of Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz, which is seeking to enforce a $4.22 billion compensation award for ******* ets that Moscow took when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
Officials said the ‌vessel, the Professor Molchanov, was seized late on Wednesday in Barentsburg, a coal mining settlement that Russia operates on the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard under ‌the terms of a 1920 treaty.
Russia called the arrest of the ship an act of piracy and said it had summoned the Norwegian ambassador to deliver a strong protest. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it would work to secure the vessel's release.
"Amid the restrictive measures imposed by Norway against Russia on Svalbard - measures that violate international law - Russian organizations and citizens operating on the archipelago are effectively under blockade," it said, accusing Norway of violating the treaty.

NUUK, Greenland (AP) — Two reports investigating the forcible contraception of thousands of Indigenous women and girls in Greenland by Danish health authorities for decades were split over whether the practice constituted genocide.
The Greenlandic government, which commissioned the inquiry, released the reports Friday but, when pressed by journalists during a news conference, would not say whether its leaders concluded whether a genocide had occurred. The government told the authors to use the definition under the United Nations' 1948 genocide convention, which includes "imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group."
The reports come as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes to control the Arctic island, which is a self-governing territory of Denmark. The leaders of Greenland and Denmark say the island is not for sale and only Greenlanders can decide their fate.
Known as the "spiral case, " the revelations have rocked both Denmark and Greenland. More than 350 Greenlandic Indigenous women and girls, including some 12 years old and younger, previously came forward to investigators and reported that they were forcibly given contraception by Danish health authorities. Denmark says more than 4,000 women and girls — reportedly half the fertile women in Greenland at the time — received IUDs between the 1960s and mid-1970s.
The Inuit victims, many of them teenagers at the time, said they were either fitted with intrauterine contraceptive devices, known as IUDs or coils, or given a hormonal birth control injection. They were not told details about the procedure, or did not give their consent.

A US Air Force flight bound for Antarctica returned to New Zealand after a warning about "potentially hazardous" ***** e activity, according to New Zealand authorities.
A spokesperson for New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the agency was aware the US Air Force flight from Christchurch turned around following a warning it issued, known as a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen).
The ***** e activity was notified to the agency by Russia's State Air Traffic Management Corporation, "resulting in the issuance of a NOTAM advising pilots of the hazard," CAA said in a statement Tuesday.
In a follow-up statement Wednesday, CAA said it was made aware by the Russian air traffic agency of a planned missile launch and "associated potential hazard to international airspace, within New Zealand's Oceanic Flight Information Region (FIR)," a 30-million-square-kilometer area which is one of the largest airspaces in the world.

Tarling, the younger brother of Ineos Grenadiers cyclist Josh, was involved in a "serious accident" while taking part in the eighth stage of the 166.8km route from Melgaço to Fafe.
Tarling was riding for the NSN Development Team, having signed a two-year deal ahead of the 2025 season.
In a statement, NSN said: "Following Fin Tarling's tragic passing on Friday, the NSN Development Team has withdrawn from the remaining Volta a Portugal stages."

LONDON (AP) — Icelandic coast guards and special forces seized a ship operated by a group founded by anti-whaling activist Paul Watson and detained its crew, officials in the Arctic island nation said Saturday.
The Icelandic Coast Guard said the crew of whaling ship Hvalur 9 requested **** istance on Thursday evening because they believed their safety was under threat from the protest vessel Bandero. It said the Bandero ignored coast guards' instructions to leave Icelandic waters, and later an order to stop its engines.
Coast guards and the police special forces Viking Squad boarded the vessel around midnight on Thursday and detained its crew. Watson was not aboard.
The Captain Paul Watson Foundation confirmed in a statement that the vessel had been seized. It said the 21 crew members were being detained aboard the ship without their phones.
The ship arrived Friday in Reykjavik, Iceland's capital, and police have taken over the investigation, the coast guard agency said. Icelandic national broadcaster RUV reported that police will seek to deport the crew and ban them from returning to Iceland.

(By Oil & Gas 360) – Alaska may hold some of the largest undeveloped oil and natural gas resources in North America, yet attracting the capital needed to develop them remains a persistent challenge.
That contradiction is becoming increasingly apparent as policymakers seek to revive Arctic energy development while investors continue directing most of their dollars elsewhere. Despite renewed interest in North Slope production, major discoveries, and efforts to expand leasing opportunities, Alaska remains a difficult sell in a market increasingly focused on short-cycle returns and capital discipline.
The resource potential is enormous.
Alaska's North Slope still contains billions of barrels of recoverable oil, while the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is estimated to hold between 4 billion and nearly 12 billion barrels of technically recoverable crude. The National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska spans nearly 24 million acres and represents one of the largest undeveloped hydrocarbon regions in the United States.
Yet resource size alone has not translated into investor enthusiasm.

(NewsNation) — Russia's presidential envoy says that the country and the United States will sign an agreement Friday to continue designing an underwater tunnel connecting Russia's Chukotka region to Alaska across the Bering Strait.
Kirill Dmitriev made the announcement Thursday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
"As for the tunnel. We will have news tomorrow, we are signing an agreement that we will continue the design of the tunnel. There will be a tunnel," he told Russian outlet TV Zvezda, according to a translation.

The Bering Strait separates mainland Russia and mainland Alaska by around 50 miles at its narrowest point. Two small islands — one owned by Russia and one owned by the U.S. — sit in the middle of that distance. Geographically, the distance is fairly short and the water is relatively shallow, with an average depth of 98–164 feet. The strait is just south of the Arctic Circle, where construction efforts would face extreme temperatures.

A ‘triple whammy’ of chaos has triggered a downward spiral in Antarctica, scientists discover

For decades, it seemed Antarctica might be insulated from the kind of rapid ice melting unfolding in the Arctic. But in 2015, that changed when the sea ice fringing this vast, icy continent stopped expanding and began to decline dramatically. Now, scientists say they have figured out why this happened — and their findings spell deep trouble for a region whose fate affects us all.
Antarctic sea ice has been on a steep downward trend for nearly a decade. It reached a record low in 2022 and again in 2023, when it dropped to just 691,000 square miles, equivalent to an area of missing ice larger than Greenland compared to average levels. This year saw a higher amount of sea ice at the height of the Southern Hemispher summer, but it was still at its 16th lowest level in nearly five decades of record keeping.
Scientists have been working for years to understand what is driving the precipitous decline in sea ice and whether it is a sign Antarctica is entering a new state.
The new research identifies a series of different processes — driven by intensifying winds and warming water — which flipped the ocean surrounding Antarctica “out of balance.” It amounts to a “triple whammy of climate chaos,” the report authors wrote in a press release accompanying the paper, which was published in the journal Science Advances on Friday.
The chain of events began decades ago, when westerly winds around Antarctica started to get stronger, said Aditya Narayanan, a study author and research fellow in physical oceanography at the University of Southampton in the UK.
