Former San Francisco 49ers running back Roger Craig revealed he has vascular dementia during his pre-recorded Pro Football Hall of Fame speech on Saturday.
Craig, the three-time Super Bowl winner, four-time Pro Bowler and 1988 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, said that his doctors believe his diagnosis may be in part to the concussions he sustained in his football career.
"Two things can be true," Craig said during his pre-recorded comments. "Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I can imagine. They helped shape the man I became.
"At the same time, we know more today about brain health than when I played, and I hope sharing my story encourages people to pay attention to their health and seek help when something doesn't feel right."
While giving his speech on video, Craig attended his Hall of Fame enshrinement and bust reveal ceremony on Saturday in Canton and received his gold jacket as part of the Hall of Fame festivities.
