The UCLA Bruins made a serious shakeup to start off Week 1 of their college season by announcing the dismissal of Athletic Director Martin Jarmond, after Jamond served as UCLA's AD since 2020.
Not only did UCLA can Jarmond, they burned $6.5 million to move on. Jarmond will receive a slightly lesser buyout than former football head coach DeShaun Foster received after being fired last year. The Bruins have now dedicated over $12 million to buyouts over the past year between Foster and Jarmond.
For a university that's seeking profitability in every avenue, spending $12 million on two employees to leave your program doesn't make perfect sense, but with the moves, it's become clear that UCLA believed that keeping Jarmond and Foster would have cost the athletic programs even more.
ESPN's Paolo Uggetti reported on Jarmond's firing Monday afternoon.
"Jarmond is set to be owed the $6.5 million remaining on his contract. He has been there since 2020 when he arrived from Boston College," Uggetti wrote. "During his time at UCLA, Jarmond oversaw the departure of Chip Kelly in 2024 and replaced him with former player DeShaun Foster, who went 5-10 in a short stint as the football program's head coach. Foster was fired last year after an 0-3 start to the season.

USC has Notre Dame and UCLA as main rivals, but ESPN had a different idea. When creating a list of arch-enemies for various power conference teams in college football, ESPN came up with an answer which is not a school, but an organization: the NCAA. A lot of Trojan fans would nod in agreement.
Paolo Uggetti wrote that "The Trojans count both UCLA and Notre Dame among their most bitter rivals, yet there is no more fraught relationship than the one they have had with the NCAA. Sixteen years later, the sting surrounding the way the NCAA punished Reggie Bush and USC following an investigation into Bush receiving what it deemed improper gifts is a lingering part of the identity of Trojans fans and, to an extent, the program as a whole. As the sport has become as professionalized as it ever has been, the way Bush's missteps and the heavy punishment USC received (bowl ban and vacating wins, including a national ******* le) look in comparison has only served to reinforce USC fans' belief that their team was unfairly punished."
Uggetti's point rings true. The violations USC was punished for look like nickel-and-dime matters of very little weight and consequence all these years later. That point aside, enforcement of violations was hardly consistent across all schools. Penn State, for instance, committed wrongdoings which far exceeded USC's in severity (the Jerry Sandusky scandal) but was not punished more severely. That's just one of several examples one could come up with.

LIV Golf members all packed into the Chatham Hills clubhouse on Tuesday night to meet with CEO Scott O'Neil and the new, still unnamed, investor that is supposedly set to bankroll the venture next season.
But after that meeting, even with very little actual info coming out, it doesn't sound like everyone is on board with the league's future plans.
"The investor is excited, but obviously there's a few things that need to be figured out," Martin Kaymer said, via ESPN's Paolo Uggetti. "It's still early to tell what next year will look like, but they're working very hard to get more specifics."
LIV Golf's future has been uncertain for weeks, ever since Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced that it would no longer fund the startup league after the 2026 campaign. The season will end after this week's tournament in Indianapolis, too, after the team championship was called off. It marked the second canceled event of the season.
The league is now facing multiple lawsuits, and some players are still waiting on payments from the Bedminster tournament in New Jersey earlier this month, according to the Sports Business Journal. The league has reportedly been running on loans for months.
