Biohaven (BHVN) stock plummeted Thursday after the company paused enrollment in a midstage study of its seizure treatment due to safety concerns.
The Food and Drug Administration is now requiring Biohaven to ***** s the potential for human toxicity from a metabolite in the drug, opakalim. Opakalim is in testing as a treatment for focal onset seizures. But, in rats, it proved toxic.
Dosing is still ongoing. But the rodent toxicity setback likely delays potential regulatory approval. That's a boon for Xenon Pharmaceuticals (XENE), which is in late-stage testing with its drug, azetukalner. Both drugs work by opening potassium channels in the nervous system to calm overactive brain cells.
On the stock market today, Biohaven stock dropped 14.7% to 12.79. Shares fell below their 21-day and 50-day moving averages on the news, MarketSurge shows. Xenon stock slid a fraction to 58.80.
To ask for FDA approval, Biohaven will need the results of studies called RISE-2 and RISE-3. The hold was placed on the former, but the latter is still ongoing. The company expects to have the results from RISE-3 later this year.

A cancer diagnosis is never something anyone is ready for, but when it happens, the effects can go well beyond the physical and emotional traumas that turn lives upside down.
There are financial aspects that, if not addressed, can affect quality of life and even survival rates. Having a financial planner in their corner can help patients organize, ensure they're getting the most from their benefits and prepare as much as possible for whatever comes next. "With cancer, you get diagnosed, and then there is this few-week window before they start treatment," said Dr. Carolyn McClanahan, a physician and financial planner. That's a critical time for putting a plan in place, as "once you start treatment, it can be a drain on your physical and mental health."
The National Cancer Institute has a term for devastating financial consequences resulting from the high costs of medical care patients and their families face: financial toxicity. While it's inherently financial in nature, the stress it causes has real medical implications. That makes financial planning incredibly important, especially for those struggling with the high costs of care:
A pilot study of 107 patients being treated for blood cancers found that comprehensive planning resulted in higher mental and physical quality of life, among those experiencing financial toxicity.

Senegal have appointed France's 1998 World Cup winner Patrick Vieira as head coach, the country's football federation announced Tuesday, succeeding Pape Thiaw who was dismissed after the World Cup.
The appointment of Vieira, who was born in Senegal, is a "strategic move", the federation said in a social media post, aiming to "establish a high-level technical staff, in line with our country's sporting ambitions".
His main mission will be to revitalise the team after Senegal's bruising loss to Belgium in the last 32 of the World Cup.
Thiaw was sacked less than two weeks later. The 45-year-old former Senegal international had taken over as national team boss in 2024.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) president said at the time that toxicity had surrounded the team at the World Cup after Thiaw demanded a pay rise.

A serving councillor took his own life days after being arrested on suspicion of an online **** ual offence, a coroner has concluded.
Cahal Burke, who died on 9 March, represented the Lindley ward in Huddersfield on Kirklees Council from 2010 until his suspension from the Liberal Democrat party on 4 March. He was mayor for one year in 2023-4.
Burke was arrested in February and was on bail at the time of his death. Following an inquest in writing on 4 August, **** istant coroner Charlotte Keighley ruled the 48-year-old's cause of death was drug toxicity.
West Yorkshire Police said it was "continuing to conduct some inquires as part of our safeguarding responsibilities".
In a report containing her findings, Keighley said Burke's family had visited his home address in Huddersfield on 6 March to check on him, as they had not heard from him for a number of days.

As part of its ongoing belief that the rights of white people are in peril and require government protection, the White House earlier this week released a 162-page report accusing the National Museum of American History of engaging in "anti-White activism", declaring that exhibits at the various Smithsonian museums were prepared by "people who don't want you to love your country". Two days later, a group of nearly a dozen Republican lawmakers led by Texas representative August Pfluger threatened to send the Department of Justice after the WNBA unless it makes itself "accountable" for presumably not protecting embattled Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark against the physicality of game's Black players. Pfluger implied hard fouls against Clark "may be racially motivated", and threatened a civil rights lawsuit against the WNBA on Clark's behalf could be an option.
The Pfluger letter represents the third time in less than a month the Trump administration and its loyalists have interfered in sports, twice using it as a front in its ongoing culture war, putting the Justice Department on high alert against anything it considers to be anti-white, anti-straight, anti-Christian. Enlisting Clark is pitting her against her own teammates and the culture of her league, but maybe the government believes she's already there.
Related: Republicans ask WNBA to protect Caitlin Clark from possible 'racially motivated' attacks
In a sense, time is running out on Clark. She has spent the last few days centering her public comments on the toxicity of social media, but the entirety of her five years as a national superstar deftly avoiding any direct link between her vague personal politics and the anti-Black portions of her fan base who loudly claim her. The government implying she needs federal protection from her Black opponents further forces her hand to speak declaratively about being positioned as a target by her sport.
It is yet another step in a dystopian continuum. In June, the Trump DOJ announced it would investigate if Major League Baseball's Pride Night discriminated against Christian players. Trump last week called Fifa head Gianni Infantino to have a one-game suspension against by US national men's soccer team forward Folarin Balogun rescinded before Team USA's quarter-final loss to Belgium.

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White denounced racism and all forms of hate after Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas revealed she was subjected to online abuse in the aftermath of her on-court incident with Caitlin Clark.
One day after Thomas said she faced death threats and racial slurs, White condemned anyone engaging in that "absolutely unacceptable" behavior.
"I think as a league, as a whole, there's been so much more toxicity, racism, ****** phobia, straight-out nonsense... it is absolutely unacceptable," White said at practice on Wednesday, July 1. "If you are one of these people that are online doing this, do not call yourself a WNBA fan."
White also said she believes a majority of the toxic discourse impacting Thomas is the direct result of online agitators using the situation to push an agenda, rather than the real reactions of true fans of the Fever or the league.
"I truly believe that it is an online community that is using our league, that is using our players to continue to further divisive, hateful narratives," she added. "We are not about continuing this narrative, and it's just absolutely unacceptable... We've got to continue to support our players in our league."

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) is one of the high growth stocks to buy right now. On June 14, Eli Lilly announced positive results from the Phase 3 BRUIN CLL-322 clinical trial, which evaluated the addition of Jaypirca (pirtobrutinib) to a time-limited venetoclax and rituximab regimen for patients with relapsed or refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia/CLL or small lymphocytic lymphoma/SLL. The study met its primary endpoint, showing that the pirtobrutinib combination reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 45% compared to the control arm of venetoclax and rituximab alone.
The trial enrolled 639 patients, nearly 80% of whom had been previously treated with a covalent BTK inhibitor, making the findings highly relevant to current clinical practices. At a median follow-up of 27.3 months, the median progression-free survival/PFS in the pirtobrutinib arm had not been reached, compared to 39.7 months in the control arm. These benefits were consistent across various high-risk patient subgroups, and the pirtobrutinib combination also showed a significant advantage in the time to next treatment.
The safety profile of the regimen was consistent with the known profiles of the individual medicines, with minimal additive toxicity observed when adding pirtobrutinib. Discontinuation rates due to treatment-related adverse events were similar between the two study arms. Based on these findings, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) plans to submit the data to global regulatory authorities with the goal of expanding the use of Jaypirca as a potential new standard of care in previously treated CLL/SLL populations.
Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) is a healthcare company that develops human pharmaceutical products, including cardiometabolic health, oncology, and immunology products.
While we acknowledge the potential of LLY as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. June 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research said on Wednesday it has accepted ‌a letter of intent for an artificial intelligence-based ‌drug development tool designed to help predict drug-induced liver injury.
Drug-induced liver damage is a major cause of trial failures, and current methods do not reliably predict human risk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the tool could potentially help improve early safety ****** sments, ‌reduce reliance on animal testing and support more informed decisions before human trials begin.
Here are some details:
• The tool, an AI-driven digital liver model, has been admitted to the agency's Innovative Science and Technology Approaches for New Drugs (ISTAND) pilot programme.
• The model is designed to ****** s the risk of liver toxicity in ‌new small-molecule drugs by comparing their chemical structures with existing medicines that have known safety profiles.
