THE ALL ENGLAND CLUB, London — Like so much in women's tennis, it all goes back to Martina Navratilova.
She was the first great female champion of the modern era from what is now called the Czech Republic. She won on the Wimbledon grass like no one has, before or since. Nine singles **** les, plus seven more in women's doubles and four in mixed doubles.
Navratilova defected from Czechoslovakia to the U.S. in 1975, but as she became the best player the sport had ever seen, the little girls in her birth country kept watching.
Navratilova spawned Hana Mandlíková, who led to Helena Suková and Jana Novotná and Petra Kvitová and Karolína Plíšková and Barbora Krejčíková and Markéta Vondroušová and Kateřina Siniaková, the world's top doubles player these days, who is also now on the cusp of the top 30 in singles. Suková was No. 1 in doubles and No. 4 in singles.
All of them won Grand Slam **** les or became the world No. 1. All except Plíšková, Suková and Siniaková won the Wimbledon singles **** le. Plíšková made the singles final in 2021; Siniaková has three Wimbledon women's doubles **** les, two with Krejčíková; Suková won the women's doubles four times and the mixed three times.

Novak Djokovic's quest toward his elusive 25th major championship continued on Sunday in the fourth round at Wimbledon. In the process, the 39-year-old Serbian etched his name into All England Club history.
With a 7-6(6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin, Djokovic surpassed Swiss legend Roger Federer for the most Wimbledon singles wins on the men's side to date. Djokovic has 106 and counting.
That said, he'll need 14 more victories at London's Grand Slam to match Martina Navratilova, a Czech-American who tops the women's list with 120 singles wins at the grass-court major.
Navratilova retired with nine Wimbledon ****** les. Federer clocked out with eight. Djokovic's been stuck at seven since 2022. But, after previously discussing the importance of preserving energy early in major tournaments, he made it through the first three rounds of this year's Wimbledon with relative ease.
None of those matches went to five sets. Djokovic fell in straight sets to the now-24-year-old Italian phenom in last year's semifinals.

Aryna Sabalenka's puppy Ash, Anna Kalinskaya's dog Bella, and Anastasia Potapova's toy poodle Bula were among the adorable pets that stole the spotlight at this year's French Open. The tournament even issued official accreditations for the canine companions and introduced a dedicated dog concierge service to cater to their needs.
The singles champions, Mirra Andreeva and Alexander Zverev, also posed with their adorable pets on the court after lifting their respective trophies.
However, those heartwarming scenes will not be repeated at Wimbledon, as the All England Club prohibits pet dogs from entering the grounds, a policy that has prompted a plea from Sabalenka and drawn criticism from Martina Navratilova.
Speaking on the Tennis Channel, journalist Jon Wertheim revealed that Wimbledon's strict ban on pet dogs stems from the UK's pet quarantine regulations and the need to protect the grass on the courts and fields from potential damage.
"What is going on here at Wimbledon? Well, I was given two answers by the club. One is that there are some very strict pet quarantine policies in the UK. Also, the grass is an issue. Not just the grass courts, but the fields. Henman Hill behind us. It does not go well with dogs and grass and public **** es. So, alas, no dogs at Wimbledon," Wertheim said.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek earned top marks from Martina Navratilova after brushing aside Karolina Pliskova to reach the third round.
The world number three was in tears on court after her ******* le defence began with a stuttering three-set victory over world number 79 Taylor Townsend.
She delivered a far more accomplished display on Thursday and wasted little time in wrapping up an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win over 2021 runner-up Pliskova.
Eighteen-time grand slam singles champion Navratilova graded Swiatek’s performance an A+.
“When legends like that say nice things about you, it means a lot,” the third seed said in her on-court interview.

Madison Keys won the Eastbourne ******* le for a third time as the American defeated Germany's Tatjana Maria 7-5, 6-4 in the final of the Wimbledon warm-up event on Saturday.
Keys, seeded second, ignored sweltering temperatures on the south coast to see off the world number 112 in 93 minutes.
It was the 31-year-old's first ******* le since she clinched her maiden Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open last year.
Keys joins an illustrious group of three-time champions on the Eastbourne grass, alongside Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

"I always forget how heavy this one is," Keys, 31, joked as she lifted the trophy.
"It's been such a special place for me to play here in Eastbourne.
