NEW YORK — The electronic voice sounded almost embarrassed, as it made the call that everyone on the tennis court could see was wrong.
Monday at the U.S. Open, No. 21 seed Anna Kalinskaya led Russian compatriot Anna Blinkova 6-4, 2-2, 40-15 on Court 5.
After a short rally, Kalinskaya sent a forehand crosscourt that bounced comfortably inside the singles sideline. As it rose off the blue acrylic, Kalinskaya turned for the end of the game — before an almost plaintive shout of "out" echoed across the court.
Kalinskaya looked like she had seen a ghost, and immediately requested a replay. The chair umpire made the announcement, but nothing came up. Eventually, the screen showed a ball bouncing several feet away from the nearest line, but it was a replay of a serve that had nothing to do with the point in question.
In a statement sent to The Athletic, a USTA spokesperson said: "At 40-15 in the fifth game of the second set, a malfunction with the ELC Live system caused a shot hit by Kalinskaya to be inaccurately called out.

Alexandra Eala denied Leylah Fernandez a chance at a second consecutive ****** le at the Mubadala DC Open. An inspired performance saw the Filipino star send the defending champion packing in straight sets after fending off a comeback attempt.
Fernandez, who has now arrived in Toronto for her home tournament, opened up about how the match unfolded.
Fernandez, who has endured a rather underwhelming season, arrived at the DC Open hoping to successfully defend her ****** le. Ahead of her campaign, the Canadian star said that enjoying her time on the court played a major role in her victory 12 months ago. At last year's tournament, she staged a remarkable run, beating the likes of Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, and Anna Kalinskaya en route to the ****** le.
She made a winning start this year, convincingly dismissing Magda Linette 6-1, 6-4 in the first round. The seventh seed, however, was halted in the next round by Eala. The 21-year-old produced a dominant performance in the opening set, winning 6-2.
"I mean, honestly, Alex has been playing really well. I think the biggest thing is that she's playing with a lot of confidence. She's trusting herself, trusting her shots, her patterns, and a lot of her ****** are going in. So, that's the big difference. I feel like she's progressing well. Whatever she's doing with her team is working," Fernandez said in her post-match press conference.

Aryna Sabalenka's puppy Ash, Anna Kalinskaya's dog Bella, and Anastasia Potapova's toy poodle Bula were among the adorable pets that stole the spotlight at this year's French Open. The tournament even issued official accreditations for the canine companions and introduced a dedicated dog concierge service to cater to their needs.
The singles champions, Mirra Andreeva and Alexander Zverev, also posed with their adorable pets on the court after lifting their respective trophies.
However, those heartwarming scenes will not be repeated at Wimbledon, as the All England Club prohibits pet dogs from entering the grounds, a policy that has prompted a plea from Sabalenka and drawn criticism from Martina Navratilova.
Speaking on the Tennis Channel, journalist Jon Wertheim revealed that Wimbledon's strict ban on pet dogs stems from the UK's pet quarantine regulations and the need to protect the grass on the courts and fields from potential damage.
"What is going on here at Wimbledon? Well, I was given two answers by the club. One is that there are some very strict pet quarantine policies in the UK. Also, the grass is an issue. Not just the grass courts, but the fields. Henman Hill behind us. It does not go well with dogs and grass and public **** es. So, alas, no dogs at Wimbledon," Wertheim said.

The 23-year-old postponed her pre-tournament media shortly after quitting a practice set against Russian Anna Kalinskaya with 10 minutes remaining.
Raducanu, who is seeded 30th at the All England Club, is due to start her campaign on Monday against Croatia's Antonia Ruzic on Court One (13:00 BST).
The 2021 US Open champion did not train on Thursday and Friday because of what is believed to be a shin problem, but returned to the court on Saturday to test her fitness.
Wearing strapping around her lower right leg, Raducanu looked tentative in an hour with her team on the Aorangi Park practice courts, where her mobility was not overly tested.
