Sometimes the most memorable part of an outfit is hidden underneath. Designers have increasingly used contrasting linings to introduce unexpected flashes of color, transforming capes, coats, gowns and dramatic trains whenever they move. From Cate Blanchett to Anne Hathaway, several stars have demonstrated how a carefully chosen interior shade can turn an elegant red carpet look into something far more surprising.
Cate Blanchett delivered a memorable example at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Apprentice. Her custom Haider Ackermann for Jean Paul Gaultier strapless creation appeared predominantly black from the front, but revealed contrasting shades from other angles. A blush pink back and emerald green lining emerged as Blanchett lifted the train, giving the sophisticated design an unexpected injection of color.
Brie Larson used the same idea for superhero glamour at the London premiere of Captain Marvel. Her vivid blue Valentino gown featured an off the shoulder neckline, sculpted bodice and flowing cape. Hidden inside that cape was a shimmering gold lining, creating a dramatic metallic flash whenever the fabric moved. Nicole Kidman took a bolder approach at the New York premiere of Expats, where her sleek black Versace gown revealed a vivid lime green interior through its dramatic thigh high slit.
Helen Mirren offered a softer interpretation at the 2024 Golden Globes. Wearing Dolce & Gabbana, she paired an elegant lavender gown with a matching coat featuring voluminous sleeves. The coat's pink interior became visible as it opened, introducing another pastel shade while maintaining the sophistication of the overall look. Instead of competing with the lavender exterior, the contrasting lining gave the ensemble additional depth.
Anne Hathaway also embraced the technique with a playful maternity look at the Los Angeles premiere of The Last Thing He Wanted. Her custom Prabal Gurung ensemble centered on a blue satin high low top with a striking red interior. Paired with relaxed jeans and pointed red shoes, the contrasting colors framed her silhouette while bringing an unconventional energy to maternity dressing.

Anne Hathaway has answered one of the stranger rumors to emerge from her latest red-carpet appearance. After some social-media users questioned whether her visible baby ****** p was real, the 43-year-old actress responded with a joke rather than a lengthy explanation.
The speculation followed the August 9 premiere of The End of Oak Street, where Hathaway wore a custom Atelier Prabal Gurung halter top with low-rise jeans that left her stomach exposed. Entertainment Weekly reported that comments questioning the appearance of her ****** p began circulating alongside red-carpet footage.
Hathaway answered the following day through her own Instagram account. Her caption got directly to the point: "Fake hair, real ****** p," while the accompanying video took followers behind the scenes of her preparations for the premiere.
The actress had already publicly announced her pregnancy nearly two months earlier. She and husband Adam Shulman are expecting their third child and are already parents to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6.
Hathaway's August 10 video followed her from the glam chair to the outdoor premiere. As her team styled her hair into a high ponytail, she mouthed to the camera, "It's not my hair," setting up the "Fake hair, real ****** p" line she used in the caption.

There was a time when maternity dressing on the red carpet meant strategic cuts, conservative silhouettes and muted palettes designed to hide a baby ******* p rather than highlight it. Today, more women than ever are embracing, accentuating or baring them entirely (kudos to Kate Hudson, who was one of the first to do it in a Chanel two-piece back in the 00s). Pregnancy dressing has transformed from tricky to a major fashion statement.
From the arcades of Cannes to the steps of the Met Gala, there's no rulebook. Dressing a ******* p has evolved into everything from deconstructed menswear to sheer fabrics and sculptural couture. Here, I take a look at 16 times celebrities aged 35 and over redefined pregnancy on the world's most-watched red carpets, from the most recent to the women who wore it first.
Anne Hathaway, 43, turned heads at the premiere of her new movie The End of Oak Street in California on Sunday as she bared her baby ******* p in a statement floor-sweeping top by Prabel Gurungand low-rise relaxed fit jeans. The actress was glowing, and completed the look with her hair slicked back and a chic matte red lip.
Trust Sienna Miller to turn a ******* p reveal into couture. At 41, the British style icon traded more traditional pregnancy dressing for this incredible, cloud-like Schiaparelli creation at Vogue World in 2023. She was pregnant with her second child - her first with fiancé Oli Green.
The actress nailed it once again on the Fashion Awards red carpet in 2025. She announced her third pregnancy to the world in this incredible white sheer gown by Givenchy, which featured a sculpted sweetheart neckline.

Anne Hathaway is addressing a wave of online speculation after photos from a recent red carpet appearance put her pregnancy in the spotlight. The actor, who is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, offered a brief response after some social media users questioned whether her visible baby **** p was real.
Hathaway responded directly to the fake pregnancy claims on Aug. 10 with an Instagram Reel from the premiere of The End of Oak Street. In the caption, she wrote, "Fake hair, real **** p," before inviting followers behind the scenes of the event.
The viral baby **** p photos came from the film's Aug. 9 premiere in Burbank, California. As previously seen on the red carpet, Hathaway wore an ice-blue Prabal Gurung halter top with a cropped front and low-rise jeans, leaving her stomach visible.
People reported that the look prompted several social media comments questioning whether her **** p was authentic. Hathaway did not engage with individual critics. Instead, her short Instagram caption appeared to address the speculation with humor while making her position clear.
The Oscar winner first announced her pregnancy on June 19 through another Instagram post. In the video, Hathaway stepped into frame wearing a flowing white outfit before revealing and cradling her baby **** p. She and Shulman already share two sons.

Anne Hathaway is putting a maternity spin on a fan-favorite style combo: jeans and a cute top.
The "Odyssey" star returned to the red carpet on Sunday, Aug. 9, to celebrate her fourth film of the year, "The End of Oak Street." For the movie's California premiere, the star, who is pregnant with her third child, looked radiant in a baby-blue mock-neck top featuring a mid-drift hem that perfectly framed her growing baby ***** p.
Putting a casual spin on the custom Prabal Gurung design, which also featured a flowing train with a bold crimson lining, Hathaway styled the satin top with baggy low-rise jeans from La Ligne – cosigning the controversial Y2K low-rise jeans trend. The actress topped off her red-carpet look with diamond drop earrings, pink heels with red tips from Aquazzura, and a bold red lip.

Pregnant Anne Hathaway showed off her growing baby ******* p at the LA premiere of her upcoming survival thriller, "The End of Oak Street." The Oscar winner attended the star-studded event held at Warner Bros. Studios on August 9. She is all set to welcome her third baby with husband Adam Shulman.
At "The End of Oak Street" premiere, Anne Hathaway gave a peek at her baby ******* p in her custom Atelier Prabal Gurung top. The icy blue silk top featured a halter neckline, a sleeveless silhouette, and a high-low hem. The cascading train trailed behind her as she moved on the red carpet. The crimson lining contrasted with the light blue color of the top. The inverted cutout at the front created a cropped top that framed her baby ******* p.
The "Mother Mary" star paired it with baggy low-rise jeans and red and pink stiletto pumps from Aquazzura. Styled by Erin Walsh, she completed her look with sparkling drop earrings and a coiled Serpenti bracelet. She wore her hair in a high ponytail. Meanwhile, her makeup featured a clear complexion, black liner, and a classic red lip.
Hathaway announced her pregnancy with her and Shulman's third child in an Instagram video in June. They also share two sons, 10-year-old Jonathan and 7-year-old Jack. During an interview with PEOPLE on the red carpet, she opened up about how pregnancy feels different this time.
"You know, I was in my 30s with my other two, and I'm so different now …. something happened when I turned 40," she said. "I just realized that this isn't a dress rehearsal. It's all real. I'm not, like, saving it up for my future self. It's all happening right now. And so I think I'm just better at being present in the moment, living in gratitude, not taking anything for granted. So I think all of those things are coming together, and it's a real time to enjoy."

Anne Hathaway attended the premiere of her film The End of Oak Street on August 9.
The 43-year-old, who is pregnant with her third child, wore a bold Atelier Prabal Gurung look that showed off her baby ******* p.
The high-low ice blue halter top—with a hidden pop of crimson—featured a cascading train and was paired with low rise denim.
Is there anyone busier in 2026 than Anne Hathaway? The actress is releasing five movies this year alone (as well as promoting them worldwide), and she's pregnant with her third child.
That many films means a slew of red carpet appearances—but at her most recent one, her baby ******* p made a noticeable appearance. The Odyssey actress arrived at the August 9 premiere of her latest film, The End of Oak Street, wearing a custom Atelier Prabal Gurung high-low halter top, which the brand confirmed on Instagram.

After three back-to-back high-glam press tours (Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey), I'm sure Anne Hathaway was happy to take her foot off the gas for the more laid-back affair that was The End of Oak Street world premiere, held at the Steven J. Ross Theater in Burbank, California, on Sunday.

We have a high-low situation going on here in more ways than one, with a celestial-blue custom Atelier Prabal Gurung sculptural halter top with a cascading train, paired with oversized jeans.
As much as the red Aquazzura pumps and matching lip connect with the vivid-crimson silk lining of the top, I do wish the piece had been celestial blue throughout. The contrast feels slightly unnecessary to me, although it doesn't kill the look.
And then we get to the jeans. I love the low rise, especially with the cropped shape of the top framing her ***** p. It gives the maternity look a modern edge, but I think the jeans would have served it better had they not been quite so long or wide. There is already so much volume coming from that incredible train that the extra fabric pooling around her feet feels like too much.

Renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja is among 10 people killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, his company has said.
Elite Expeditions said it confirmed with "profound sadness and immense heartbreak" that Purja, 43, had died in Thursday's avalanche. His brother Kamal later wrote: "We will miss you every single day".
Purja, who was born in Nepal and later served in the British army, was known for scaling the world's 14 highest peaks in just over six months in 2019.
Pakistani officials earlier said the bodies of three climbers from his expedition - American Mallory Geis, Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy from Oman and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal - had been recovered.
Purja's death was also confirmed by Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who said that "the tragic death of six Nepalese and four other foreign climbers, including world record holder Nirmal Purja, in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan, has shocked us".
