BANGKOK, Aug 31 (Reuters) - After a long deployment in the Middle East, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier will dock in Thailand's resort city of Pattaya this week, raising hopes of an economic boost, even as local authorities cracked down on parts of the **** tourism destination.
The Abraham Lincoln is due to dock on Wednesday at nearby Laem Chabang, with two accompanying Navy vessels, to allow nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard to rest and recuperate after over 200 days at sea, according to Thai officials.
Ahead of its arrival, police are preparing additional patrols around Pattaya's main beachfront and nightlife district besides raids over the weekend that led to 40 to 50 people in detention for suspected prostitution, officials said.
"We are doing our best, but it is difficult," Pattaya police chief Anek Srathongyoo said on Monday, explaining that **** workers could potentially solicit in public areas without the knowledge of the authorities.

Happy Gump Day, everyone. Since it is Gump Day, we'll say that Alabama is being overlooked and thus has the rest of the SEC right where they want them:
As the season approaches, major preview magazines have already hit newsstands, including Athon Sports. Most of the magazines are projecting Alabama to finish midpack within the SEC, and Athlon is no different.
The Crimson Tide fell seventh in the SEC in the Athlon preseason rankings. The magazine projected Alabama to finish 15th nationally.
The publication had Georgia No. 1 in the league, followed by Texas, with Oklahoma third. Texas A&M was fourth on the list, with LSU rounding out the top five and Ole Miss the other school ahead of the Crimson Tide, which sat one spot ahead of Tennessee.
It has been many years since Alabama football has been under the radar like this.

Happy Thursday everyone. Yesterday we were honoring the day by Gumping over Keelon Russell's Heisman candidacy, but Charlie Potter thinks that Austin Mack is still very much alive in the race and might even have an edge.
Very interesting, but I still fully expect Russell to win the job.
Nick Kelly continues to hear great things about Devan Thompkins.
The Southern Cal transfer didn't have eye-popping stats out west, but all early indications out of Tuscaloosa are that he's got a real chance to became an instant game wrecker in his first season with the Crimson Tide.
"Once we got to know him and you started doing your research from his time at USC, you know this guy's a captain, he's a leader," defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said in the spring. "He carries himself with a professional demeanor day-in and day-out.

Ultra-marathoner Tomasz Sobania is entering the final stretch of a challenge that many think is impossible.
After more than a month on the road, thousands of miles traveled, and nearly 1,300 marathon miles logged on foot, Sobania — known as the "Polish Forrest Gump" — is closing in on his goal of running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days.
Sobania started running through Massachusetts this morning from the Boston 25 studios and has just a handful of states left before reaching the finish line in New York City on June 28.
His journey began in San Francisco on May 10, quickly moving through the Pacific Northwest before completing Alaska and Hawaii back-to-back in under a week.
By the end, Sobania will have run more than 1,300 miles while traveling across all 50 states in less than two months.
