The Washington Commanders continue to churn the bottom of the roster ahead of this week's preseason opener. After signing four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver last week, the Commanders signed three veteran offensive linemen for depth. On Monday, Washington added defensive tackle Byron Cowart.
After Tuesday's practice, the Commanders revealed another signing: linebacker Curtis Jacobs.
Jacobs, a 6-foot-1, 243-pound linebacker from Penn State, went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, but was waived during final cuts. The New England Patriots claimed Jacobs off waivers, which is where he spent his rookie season, appearing in nine games and recording four tackles.
After being released last March, the Tennessee ******* ans signed Jacobs, but he was again waived during final cuts. He signed with the New York Giants practice squad, was waived, and then re-signed with the ******* ans practice squad. He appeared in three games for Tennessee last fall.
Jacobs is familiar with the area, having graduated from the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland.

Cowart went on the Jets' injured reserve list in August of last year and he did not appear in any games for any team after being released in December. He had 26 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 15 games for the Bears in 2024.
The Patriots selected Cowart in the fifth round in 2019 and he played 19 games for New England over his first two seasons. Cowart also appeared in 17 games for the Colts in 2022.

Another move Washington made over the weekend was moving fifth-year defensive tackle DJ Davidson to the reserve/retired list.
Davidson faced long odds of making Washington's 53-man roster, but it wasn't out of the question. So, the Commanders brought in several players on Monday for tryouts. There were eight players in total, and apparently Washington has made a move, signing veteran defensive tackle Byron Cowart, according to Commanders insider Ben Standig.
Cowart is a familiar name to locals, as he finished his collegiate career at the University of Maryland. A native of Seffner, Florida, Cowart was the No. 1 overall high school player in the country in the 2015 recruiting class, committing to Auburn, where he played for three seasons.
After his one year with the Terps, Cowart entered the 2019 NFL Draft, where he was a fifth-round pick of the New England Patriots. Cowart spent three seasons with the Patriots and was waived ahead of the 2022 season. He was claimed by the Indianapolis Colts, where he spent that season. In 2023, Cowart signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, but was released shortly thereafter. He quickly signed with the Houston Texans, but was again released during final cuts.
In Sept. 2023, Cowart signed with the Miami Dolphins practice squad, where he remained for that season. He signed with the Chicago Bears in 2024, where he spent that season. In 2025, Cowart was with the New York Jets, but was placed on injured reserve and later released.

Training camp began for the New York Jets and there is plenty of optimism surrounding the team in 2026. By most accounts, the team had a terrific offseason adding quality veterans with familiarity playing for head coach Aaron Glenn and also set themselves up for a nice future with their 2026 NFL draft class at key positions.

If not for general manager Darren Mougey making a few moves right before the start of the season, this would have been one of the worst defensive lines in all of football.
The Jets added plenty of depth last offseason, signing Jay Tufele, Byron Cowart and Derrick Nnadi to rotate next to Quinnen Williams. However, neither of the three distinguished themselves in camp and only Tufele made the final roster. Cowart was injured in training camp and released with a settlement and Nnadi was traded back to the Chiefs after winning a Super Bowl in Kansas City the previous year.
Mougey acted quickly, acquiring Jowon Briggs from the Browns and Harrison Phillips from the Vikings. Both were substantial upgrades on the defensive line and Briggs was arguably one of the team's best players last year.
