For any followers of Detroit Catholic Central who were a little worried about how a quality and deep senior class from last year's Division 1 state championship team would be replaced, Thursday's season opener against Clinton Chippewa Valley showed that Catholic Central should be just fine.
Catholic Central opened up its ****** le defense with a 55-0 rout of Chippewa Valley, showing it will still be elite behind a blend of upperclassmen who showed they should thrive in expanded roles, and talented underclassmen who should be household names soon on the recruiting circuit — if they aren't already.
"We focused on our process and working really hard," Catholic Central head coach Justin Cessante said. "I thought we did that all summer. These guys really want their own identity. We wanted to set the tone for the season and they sure did."
Catholic Central entered the season opener with just two returning starters on defense, one of whom was one of the country's top recruits in senior Gideon Gash, who has committed to Texas Tech.
Gash was his customary brilliant self, making plays in the passing game on offense, as a defensive back on defense and on special teams, returning a punt 48 yards for a touchdown.

Peters-Berger, now 18, was 14 at the time of the killing. He was arrested the day after Peters' body was found.

There have been other Bulldogs tailbacks who ran for more yards than Knowshon Moreno. There are Bulldog tailbacks with more SEC and national **** le rings than Knowshon Moreno. But pound for pound and carry for carry, has there ever been a more electric Bulldog tailbacks who ran than Knowshon Moreno? I submit that the answer is ""no." Just ask the Central Michigan Chippewas.
CMU came to Athens for the second game of the 2008 season and met a Bulldog squad with a chip on its shoulder. Georgia, led by future #1 draft pick and likely NFL Hall of Famer Matt Stafford had begun the season ranked #1 in the nation for the first time in decades. But the Red and Black actually dropped to #2 after a sleepy home opener win against Georgia Southern. They took their frustrations out on the Chips, scoring on four straight possessions coming out of halftime to cruise to a 56-17 victory.
There were plenty of highlights in this one, but the iconic moment remains Knowshon's twisting, leaping run for a drive extending first down.
Few tailbacks have ever been as shifty in traffic and as smooth in the open field as noted quiet hours back flipper Knowshon Rockwell Moreno. Knowshon would finish his day with 168 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. But it was this leap that ended up on teeshirts and message board avatars.

There was a time in the mid-2010s when Central Michigan was expected to be in the MAC Championship mix every year.
There was also a time when Brian Kelly - yes, that one - and Butch Jones - also, yes, that one - went from 2004 to 2009 coaching up Chippewa teams no one wanted to deal with.
In his second season at the helm, Matt Drinkall appears to be getting the program back to being a consistent winner again.

Last season was the first winning campaign since 2021, and just the second since 2019.
It's been a lean run, but this year's team has a veteran offense that should be stronger, and there might be just enough in place to at least hold serve on defense.
It will take a few breaks, but it's the MAC, and it's Central Michigan. The team and coaching staff have the pieces in place to make some noise.
Head Coach: Matt Drinkall (2nd year: 7-6, 7th year overall: 49-23)
Best Case / Worst Case: Play for the MAC Championship/A fourth losing season in five years.

Congrats to an 87-year-old man named Lee McFarland for making a hole-in-one—but also for taking one of the best hole-in-one photos ever.
RELATED: Wyndham Clark's crazy dream & a $900,000 penalty
McFarland made his ace at Chippewa Golf Club just outside Toledo earlier this week by knocking in a driver from 135 yards out. And did he celebrate his impressive accomplishment? Your ******* right he did. Have a look:
A beer AND a cigarette in hand by the time you pluck your golf ball out of the hole is amazing stuff. That guy was ready to rock.
And apparently, he kept up the good play as well. As you can see, Lee also shot his age.
