A new insider report claims Parton's rhinestones and towering wigs did not fit Wintour's vision for the magazine. The claim has resurfaced shortly after Parton's death, putting another spotlight on her unmistakable fashion legacy. It also raises questions about why the style icon never landed the coveted cover.
According to Rob Shuter's Naughty But Nice report, Parton was pitched for an American Vogue cover at least four times. However, the report claims Wintour repeatedly passed on the idea.
One insider alleged that Wintour considered Parton "too country, too camp and too tacky for Vogue." The source claimed Wintour focused on her exaggerated glamour rather than her broader cultural influence.
Parton never toned down that look. Instead, big hair, sparkling outfits and sky-high heels became central to her image. Her distinctive style eventually became as recognizable as many of her songs.
Still, Vogue did feature Parton inside the magazine. The publication recently revisited its 1994 profile, "Good Golly Miss Dolly," following her death. Charles Gandee wrote the piece, while Herb Ritts photographed Parton for the January 1994 issue.
