Miss America 2027 Regan Hutsell hopes her recent win will inspire young girls across the nation.
Hutsell was crowned on Sept. 6, making her the first Miss America to wear her natural hair while being crowned. Last week, just days before she was crowned the 99th Miss America, the then-Miss Texas **** leholder told PEOPLE about a question she had been asked during preliminary competition rounds about wearing her natural hair as a pageant contestant.
"When I first started [competing], I didn't know what I was going to do with my hair," said Hutsell. "I didn't know if I was going to straighten it, I didn't know if I was going to wear it natural. I had straightened my hair a few years ago, and it didn't bounce back. And coming to this point in my life where I decided, no, I'm going to wear it curly; I'm going to wear it as is.
Wearing her natural hair while competing throughout her pageant career had helped Hutsell redefine what beauty meant for her.
