Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham have built a lasting partnership on their own terms.
The pair met at a charity event in 1986, the same year The Oprah Winfrey Show made its debut. Though they later got engaged, Winfrey and Graham ultimately chose not to walk down the aisle — a decision Winfrey has credited with helping their relationship thrive over the past 40 years.
"He and I agree that had we tied the marital knot, we would not still be together," she wrote in a January 2020 issue of Oprah Daily.
Instead, Winfrey has described what she and Graham share as a "spiritual partnership," borrowing a term from author Gary Zukav.
"Our relationship works because he created an identity beyond being 'Oprah's man.' ... And because we share all the values that matter (integrity being number one)," Winfrey wrote. "And because we relish seeing the other fulfill and manifest their destiny and purpose."

Oprah Winfrey just gave longtime fans a major throwback moment. The television icon made a rare public appearance alongside her longtime partner, Stedman Graham, during a reunion celebrating the legacy of The Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago. The gathering brought former Harpo Productions employees back together 15 years after Winfrey's groundbreaking daytime talk show aired its final episode in 2011.
The celebration also comes at an especially fitting time. The Oprah Winfrey Show launched nationally in 1986, meaning 2026 marks its 40th anniversary. For Winfrey and Graham, the year carries another milestone: the famously private couple have also been together for approximately four decades.

Winfrey and Graham attended the gathering at Reunion, chef Art Smith's restaurant at Chicago's Navy Pier. Smith has deep ties to Winfrey's world. He previously worked as her personal chef and appeared on her talk show, making his restaurant an appropriate setting for a night built around old friendships and shared history.

Their careers may be larger than life, but these celebrities have chosen to keep their love lives away from the spotlight.
Recently, Oprah Winfrey made headlines after she shared photos of her long-term partner, Stedman Graham, who hasn't made a public appearance with the media mogul since 2019. But Oprah is hardly the only celebrity who has opted to keep their love life under the radar. Other stars such as Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Hiddleston and Emma Stone have also managed to get married and start families without the masses knowing a thing.
In a 2018 interview with Gwyneth Paltrow, Oprah opened up about why she chose to keep her relationship private, revealing that she was often bothered by the number of false stories that would come out every time she and Stedman were seen together. "It's why I stopped making as many public appearances with Stedman, because I realized that every time there's a new photograph, there's a new story," she stated.
Ahead, see the celebrities whose significant others we rarely see.
