COUNTY CLARE, Ireland (AP) — British Amateur champion Stuart Grehan didn't flinch when he was 3 down after three holes against the No. 1 amateur in golf. The Irishman rallied to beat Preston Stout on the 18th hole Saturday as Great Britain and Ireland took a one-point lead over the Americans in the Walker Cup.
Luke Poulter of England held off 17-year-old Miles Russell in the last singles match on the course, giving GB&I a 6 1/2-5 1/2 lead going into the final day at Lahinch as it tries to beat the Americans for the first time since 2015.
GB&I had a three-point lead after the opening day its last time on home soil, in 2023 at St. Andrews, only for the Americans to win 10 of the 14 matches on Sunday. The Americans had a one-point lead last year at Cypress Point and lost only one of the 10 singles matches in a 17-9 win.
"We're ahead, but we need to reset for tomorrow," said Poulter, the son of Ryder Cup stalwart Ian Poulter and a senior at Florida. He turned the match in his favor with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole and a stellar up-and-down on the par-3 16th.

(NASDAQ:GOOGL) agreeing to pay $526 million toward the Cypress Solar project and another $190 million for transmission upgrades. Those commitments benefit Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR), the regulated utility responsible for turning Google's computing ambitions into reliable power. The arrangements also reveal why electricity, not chips, may become the next constraint on AI growth.

LAHINCH, Ireland – Multiple players on the U.S. Walker Cup team are dealing with stomach issues ahead of the 51st edition at Lahinch Golf Club.
William Jennings, a rising junior at Alabama, and Oklahoma State senior Ethan Fang, who competed in last year's Walker Cup at Cypress Point, did not join their other eight teammates for on-course practice on Thursday morning as they recover from stomach illnesses.
"They're good," U.S. captain Nathan Smith said. "They're just going to get a little rest and should be good to go."
This is not the first time that a stomach illness has stricken Walker Cup competitors the week of the competition. In 2021 at Seminole, 16 members from both teams, including the two captains, contracted stomach bugs, with some gastrointestinal issues so severe that they required players be sent to the emergency room.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two teams had alternates on site, and two of them – American Mac Meissner and GB&I's Jake Bolton – were subbed into action. It marked the first time in the event, which dates to 1922, that alternates were used.

The biennial competition between 10 of the best amateurs from the United States and their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland will take place Sept. 5-6 at Lahinch in Ireland. It's the first time Lahinch has hosted the Walker Cup.

Great Britain and Ireland now have its 10.
Still buzzing from his U.S. Amateur victory on Sunday at Merion, England's Jack Whaley was among the players named to the GB&I Walker Cup team by the R&A on Tuesday morning.
"I think I proved that I'm good in match play," Whaley said.
Whaley, whom captain Dean Robertson admitted was not in line to be selected for his debut until he lifted the Havemeyer Trophy to earn an automatic bid, joins six returners from last year's 17-9 defeat to the U.S. at Cypress Point: Englishmen Tyler Weaver, Luke Poulter and Eliot Baker, Scotland's Niall Shiels Donegan and Connor Graham, and British Amateur champion Stuart Grehan of Ireland; all six had previously secured their spots via the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
"He performed so well under the umbrella at Merion with his double gloves on, showcasing that he can not only perform brilliantly in the U.S., but he can perform in adverse weather, too," Robertson said of the 22-year-old Whaley, a rising senior at Florida State and one of seven U.S. college products representing GB&I. "Before last week, I wouldn't have seen Jack in the team, but after watching him, the talent that he's got and the humility that he's got and the way that he spoke, I'm really excited to welcome him."

Right-hander Alex Petrovic grew up in Cypress, Texas, a suburb of Houston, the son of parents who played basketball at Oberlin College. Alex's physical gifts manifested themselves on the baseball diamond rather than the basketball court, and the youngster quickly began standing out on the sandlots around Texas. He attended Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas, where he dominated as both a hitter and a pitch, earning TAPPS First Team All-State honors in 2022 and 2023. Inflammation in his right arm kept him off of the mound for the majority of his senior year, and may have cost him a selection in the 2023 MLB Draft; despite solid results, Petrovic was not considered an elite talent, and he ended up going undrafted, leading him to honor his commitment to Auburn University.
His career with the Tigers began inauspiciously, as the inflammation in his arm returned that fall. It calmed down to the point that, when the spring began, the right-hander was able to take the mound for his new team after missing the first three weeks of the season. Appearing in 7 games for Auburn, Petrovic allowed 7 earned runs in 11.0 innings, good for a 5.73 ERA, giving up 15 hits, walking 3, and striking out 17. There is a chance that the right-hander might have improved as the weather continued warming, but Petrovic sustained a stress fracture in his right elbow in early April, ending his season prematurely.
The right-hander had surgery on his elbow, having screws inserted into it, and returned to the mound at Plainsman Park for the 2025 season. Improbably, the exact same thing almost happened a second year in a row. The right-hander appeared in 7 games, starting 5, and posted a 4.34 ERA in 18.2 innings, allowing 13 hits, walking 4, and striking out 25, but once again, an injury on a different spot on his arm sustained in early April ended his season early. His velocity had backed up from the low-90s into the high-80s and his breaking **** did not look as sharp, and it was only a matter of time before something in his arm went off. A draft-eligible sophomore because of his age, Petrovic did not hear his name called in the 2025 MLB Draft.
When his arm felt better later that summer, the right-hander went to a baseball training facility in Lakeland, Florida- the Florida Base ARMory- and worked on making subtle changing his mechanics to put less stress on his arm and elbow and hopefully prevent a third-consecutive season-ending injury in 2026.
The 22-year-old returned to Auburn for his redshirt sophomore season armed with new mechanics and not only was he able to make it through the entire year without an injury, but Petrovic also had a very solid season. His fastball having gained a few ticks from the mechanical changes that were made and his secondary stuff looking sharper, he appeared in 17 games, starting all of them, and posted a 3.21 ERA in 92.2 innings, allowing 70 hits, walking 24, and striking out 92.

The Walker Cup is two months away, and the USGA announced Wednesday the first four selections for the United States squad.
Preston Stout, Tyler Watts, Ethan Fang and Miles Russell will represent the stars and stripes Sept. 5-6 at Lahinch in Ireland, site of the 51st Walker Cup — a biennial match between the top amateurs from the United States and those from Great Britain and Ireland.
Stout, Watts and Fang earned automatic spots on the U.S. side thanks to being the highest-ranked Americans in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, while Russell was selected by the Walker Cup committee.
Stout, a rising senior at Oklahoma State, recently moved to No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He won the individual ******* le at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship in June and was on the Walker Cup team last year at Cypress Point. He also won medalist honors at the 2025 U.S. Amateur and he's likely to be No. 1 on the PGA Tour University Class of 2027 rankings. Last week, he made his first cut in a PGA Tour event, finishing in the top 15 at the John Deere Classic, where he played on a sponsor exemption.

On Thursday, June 25, Iowa State soccer coach Matt Fannon officially finalized the 2026 roster with the addition of three transfer players.
“We are really happy to add the incoming group,” Fannon said in a press release. “They will add depth and quality to our squad and bring excellent competition to improve the team.”
The first addition is Morgan Duke, a redshirt sophomore defender transferring from Nevada. Although she missed the 2025 season due to an injury, she participated in eight matches during her freshman year. Her high school career at West Salem was particularly notable, as she was a three-time First Team All-League selection and scored more than 50 goals.
Joining the goalkeeping unit is Emeline McClenahan, a sophomore from Utah. In her collegiate experience so far, she successfully recorded a shutout and two saves during a match against Westminster. McClenahan was a highly touted recruit out of high school, earning United Soccer Coaches Illinois All-State honors and a ranking as the number two goalkeeper in the Midwest.
The final transfer is Izabella Tejeda, a redshirt freshman midfielder who spent the 2025 season with the Oregon Ducks. Tejeda was a decorated high school player, winning the 2025 Golden Boot Award and being named the PCAL Cypress Division Offensive Player of the Year. Her senior season was highlighted by an impressive scoring average of 1.7 goals per game, and she led her team to the playoffs in four consecutive seasons.

Matt Moloney has a chance to do something that hasn't been accomplished in 50 years come Saturday.
The rising junior at Georgia advanced to the final of the 2026 British Amateur at Royal Liverpool, knocking out Phil Mickelson Award winner Kihei Akina in the quarterfinals before topping Germany's Emil Riegger in the semifinals. If Moloney were to take home the ***** le, it would be the first time in half a century that Americans have won consecutive British Ams, with Oklahoma State's Ethan Fang taking the ***** le last year at Royal St. George's.
“It's hard not to think about (winning)," Moloney said. "But like I said, I'm going to try my best because there is a lot of golf left to execute.”
Moloney will face Stuart Grehan, the 33-year-old mid-amateur who was on the GB&I Walker Cup team last year at Cypress Point. Grehan topped Richard Teder of Estonia 2 and 1 to join Moloney in the championship match.
The winner Saturday gets three exemptions into majors: the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, the 2027 Masters and the 2027 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, provided they remain an amateur. The loser doesn't get quite the prize: a spot in final qualifying and the Last Chance Qualifier for the Open.
