Princess Diana's iconic "revenge dress" could soon find a new owner.
More than 30 years after the late royal made fashion history in the black silk Christina Stambolian dress, the head-turning gown is headed to auction at Sotheby's.
Diana wore the dress to London's Serpentine Gallery on June 29, 1994, the same night her estranged husband, then-Prince Charles, publicly admitted to having an affair with his now-wife, Queen Camilla, in a nationally televised interview. The look went from simply being a daring dress to a statement-making piece, creating one of Diana's most famous fashion moments.
But as Sotheby's notes in its September 10 press release, the dress had been sitting in Diana's wardrobe for nearly three years before that unforgettable night. Commissioned in 1991 after Diana asked Stambolian for "something very special," the off-the-shoulder black silk design was a striking departure from the traditional royal wardrobe.
