The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite spent the entire session as the best-performing among major indexes Thursday as Wall Street reacted to big earnings reports, with Nvidia (NVDA), Salesforce (CRM) and CrowdStrike (CRWD) soaring on the stock market today. Nvidia broke out past a proper buy point.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a mild gain get whittled during the final hour of regular-session trading. The blue-chip index closed up 105 points, or 0.2%, at 53,569. Gains were led by its tech components, including Nvidia, Salesforce, IBM (IBM) and Microsoft (MSFT).
The S&P 500 moved up 0.7% to 7,730, padding early gains. Yet technology served as the only one of its 11 sectors that gained ground. But the State Street SPDR S&P Metals (XME) exchange-traded fund sped 2.2% ahead, marking a two-month high. The Nasdaq accelerated its gain during the session and ended the session at 26,541, up 1.6%. The Nasdaq-100 index moved higher by nearly 1.4%.
Small caps also made a minor gain, with the Russell 2000 up almost 0.3% to close at 3,014. Volume was 5% to 6% higher than on Wednesday on both the Nasdaq exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE composite fell 0.4% but traded off a session low of 24,596. It closed at 24,649, up 12% year to date.
The Nasdaq composite holds a 14.2% gain since Jan. 1.
