Rafael Devers' return to Fenway Park will command nearly all the attention Friday night, but the most interesting part of the Boston Red Sox lineup might be found in the final spot.
Mickey Gasper will bat ninth as Boston opens a three-game series against Devers and the San Francisco Giants. That ordinarily would not qualify as a major development, except Gasper enters Players' Weekend as the hottest hitter in the Red Sox lineup.
The 30-year-old has homered and driven in multiple runs in three consecutive games. He will serve as the designated hitter against Giants ace Logan Webb, giving Boston an unusually dangerous bat at the bottom of the order.
The Red Sox revealed their Players' Weekend lineup shortly before Friday's 7:10 p.m. ET first pitch at Fenway.
