Manager Dave Roberts embraced Blake Snell on the dugout steps. Field coordinator Bob Geren applauded from beside him. Snell's teammates hopped down from the railing to high-five him as he walked through the growing crowd.
It had been three months since he'd last started a major-league game. And in the Dodgers' 5-4 walk-off win against the Royals in the 10th inning Tuesday, he was as sharp as the team could have hoped.
Before the game, Roberts set five innings as the goal, hoping to limit Snell to around 75-80 pitches.
The lefty turned in six innings, with 84 pitches. And he held the Royals to one run and three hits while striking out 10.
It was only Snell's second start of the season, after a late build-up in spring training because of shoulder fatigue, a May season debut, and surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow.
