Portland Thorns and U.S. women's national team midfielder Olivia Moultrie has been ruled out for the remainder of the NWSL season with an ACL injury, the club announced Tuesday.
The 20-year-old sustained the right knee injury during a training session last week, the club said, and has been placed on their season-ending injury list.
"Heartbroken doesn't even begin to sum up all of the feelings right now," Moultrie said in a social media post following the announcement. "To be taken away from something you love more than anything is a feeling I never wanted to experience.
"I know there is a reason this path has been chosen for me, and I can't promise everything, but I can promise I'll be back and I'll be better."
Moultrie is considered one of the best midfielders in the league and has played a vital role in the Thorns' success this season. The club is fifth in the NWSL with a 9-6-4 record, with the next several weeks critical as teams push for their place in the postseason.
