Ahead of the Colts's joint practice Tuesday morning with the New England Patriots, Colts general manager Chris Ballard gave reporters an update on wide receiver Alec Pierce's rehab from late-March ankle surgery. Ballard said Pierce has had no setbacks in his recovery and had not received an additional platelet-rich plasma injection in his ankle since his surgery.
Ballard said Pierce's rehab process has "had its ups and downs" as the receiver "finds his new normal."
"We feel good about where he's at. We feel positivly about where' he's headed," Ballard said.
The Colts GM said the team is taking Pierce's recovery process "day-by-day" and would not offer any timeline on when he might return. Ballard said the team's plan still is for Pierce to return in time for the team's regular season opener Sept. 13 at Lucas Oil Stadium against the Ravens.
Separately, Ballard said that cornerback Charvarius Ward experienced back pain and irritation following Sunday's practice and did not travel with the team to New England. He will not participate in either this week's joint practice or Thursday's preseason opener.
