Ohio State will be in the mix to sign the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2028 cycle. That may sound like counting chickens before they hatch, but the Buckeyes are rolling early and they just landed their second junior five-star pledge.
Lawrence (Mass.) St. John's Preparatory five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas is Rivals' No. 1 passer in the class and he's the No. 7 overall prospect in the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He's now committed to head coach Ryan Day and Co.
The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder announced his decision on Saturday, choosing Ohio State over a wave of other offers. Vargas did not name finalists leading into his announcement, and for the most part, his decision timeline was under the radar, at least on a national scale.
But, when it was reported earlier this week that Vargas would be taking his name off the board on Aug. 8, arrows pointed toward Columbus. The Big Ten program now has its next five-star QB commit.
"Just the coaching staff and the place they're at, the culture, they have everything that is great for me and the right fit for me," Vargas told Rivals' Steve Wiltfong when asked why he picked OSU. "I think Ohio State is the place that can develop me the best."
