The regional administrative authority in Madrid has withdrawn Spanish top-flight club Rayo Vallecano's right to use the Vallecas stadium in order to begin urgent renovation work. This comes just under two weeks before the start of the season, even though the inadequate conditions have long been known.
"There is no way to guarantee that nothing can happen," explained the Regional Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Mariano de Paco.
The immediate consequence is that Rayo will not be able to start the season in its own stadium. The authority gives no exact details, but ***** umes that the renovation work will take "months" and plans to begin "as early as tomorrow."
The regional government is making this decision to "ensure people's safety" and says the work will address possible problems related to fire safety or sanitation. "We will act with the utmost urgency and try to make it happen in the shortest possible time," the minister announced.
Rayo Vallecano uses the municipal stadium under a right-of-use agreement; it is not owned by this year's Conference League finalist.
