Nearly one million bets from New Hampshire came in during the 38-daylong World Cup, generating two-and-half times more money than the last Super Bowl involving the New England Patriots, according to state lottery officials.
The 900,000 individual bets were placed during the soccer tournament’s 104 matches totaled almost $24 million played.
By comparison, there was $9 million bet in last February’s Super Bowl in which the Patriots lost to the Seattle Seahawks.
Charlie McIntyre, the lottery’s executive director, said what helped to boost the appeal of soccer spectacle was that Boston hosted some of the matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on the same field the Patriots play.
“Whether our players watched live, on TV, or followed along online, the results have exceeded our expectations,” McIntyre said.
