On Friday night in Buffalo, the 2026 NHL Draft began with the Leafs making the No. 1 overall pick for the first time since 2016, drafting Gavin McKenna.
The Penguins had one first-round pick (No. 22), choosing Liam Ruck. As the draft continues on Saturday, the Penguins have two picks in the second, one in the third and one in the sixth.
But the first night of the draft was not only about picks. There were some major trades, including the Bruins, who traded the No. 23 overall pick and a 2028 first-round pick (top-10 protected) to acquire winger JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth. Around the NHL, the New York Rangers acquired Pavel Dorofeyev, and the St. LouisBlues traded for Mason McTavish.
