WORCESTER – The Holy Cross football team looked forward to the challenge of and the opportunity to face nationally-ranked Lehigh, the defending Patriot League champion, in its season opener Aug. 29 at Fitton Field.
The Crusaders, largely new in 2026 with the infusion of 15 transfers and 18 first-year players and coming off a 3-9 campaign, were hopeful of starting the year fresh.
The No. 11 Mountain Hawks quickly dispelled those aspirations during a dominant first quarter.
Lehigh star senior running back Luke Yoder rushed for 90 of his 130 yards and two of his three touchdowns in the first 15 minutes, and the Mountain Hawks rolled to a 35-10 win in Rich Nagy's debut as coach.
"Against a (top team in the country), you're going to find out real quick where you're at," HC coach Dan Curran said. "There were some things we're excited about and there are some things we have to correct moving forward."

Northridge and Goshen were the top two teams in the Northern Lakes Conference last year with the Raiders eventually prevailing for their third straight NLC **** le.
No one would be surprised if those two are once again this year at the top of the league standings.
"I feel the NLC will be tough again this year across the top," said Northridge coach Chris Malott, whose squad finished 15-3-2 overall last year and 7-0 in the conference.
"We return a seasoned core from last year. Goshen and Warsaw also return some very talented players. Concord and NorthWood have some talent and I feel they may surprise some people. Plymouth has a new coach (Lindsey Stiles) and I think she will bring some good things to the program."
No. 14-ranked (3A) Northridge will be led by Adelynn Miller (12 goals, seven **** ists), Anna Garber (three goals, one **** ist), Brylee Yoder (one goal, three **** ists) and Halle Moeller from last year's Class 3A sectional championship squad. All four were all-conference selections last year. Yoder also made the honorable mention All-State team.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The annual City Golf Championship at Berkley Hills Golf Course has been canceled for this year.
The three-round event was scheduled to take place next Friday through Sunday at the City of Johnstown-owned course in Upper Yoder Township.
"Honestly, the main reason is just very low sign-ups," Derek Hayes, manager of Berkley Hills, said. "Unfortunately, they have been kinda decreasing over the last couple years. We just hit a point this year where it's so low that I just think it's not even going to be a tournament. Having 10-ish people in an event really doesn't constitute a tournament. So that just kinda made it a relatively easy decision to have to cancel.
"I'm not a huge fan of it, but you obviously can't force people to play, so there's not much control we have in that aspect."
The tournament began in 1938.

AMES — The Gilbert girls soccer team was unable to withstand a quick North Scott scoring spurt in a 3-0 loss to the Lancers in the Class 2A quarterfinals of the girls state soccer tournament on June 8 at the Lied Recreation Fields.
North Scott struck twice within two minutes late in the first half and Gilbert never recovered in suffering its first and only loss of the season.
"When you get down in a hole, it's hard to dig out," said Gilbert co-head coach Heather Currans. "They definitely have the talent to do that; it just wasn't going to happen for us tonight."
The first goal came after Gilbert was whistled for a penalty in the box. Leading Lancer scorer Reese Barnett converted the penalty kick to start the scoring with eight minutes left in the first half.
North Scott struck again when Camryn Jones got one past Gilbert keeper Annika Yoder-Stoulil with 6:37 left in the first half.
