Hurricane Marie, well out in the Pacific, created flooding and dangerous conditions at some southern California beaches over Labor Day weekend, with strong currents and huge waves presenting a threat to swimmers and surfers.
Rose Schoenfeld, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said Sunday that Marie stirred up "life-threatening" conditions as it churned in the ocean hundreds of miles off California's Pacific coast. Some south-facing beaches have seen surf up to 10 feet (3 meters) high, she said.
"We're getting reports from lifeguards that the surf conditions are very dangerous, specifically the rip currents," Schoenfeld said.
Hurricane Marie won't make landfall and is expected to weaken to a tropical storm by late Sunday, but will still but will still bring rain to parts of Los Angeles County before it dissipates. Some parts of the area have already seen as much as a quarter inch of rain Sunday, Schoenfeld said.
The National Weather Service advised people to swim only near lifeguards and to stay off rock jetties.

NEW YORK — Jose Iglesias found a way to ignite the Mets clubhouse and its fan base as soon as he entered the fray during the 2024 season.
The veteran infielder infused a badly-needed energy and leadership with the Mets fading in the standings. By the end of the campaign, with his Latin pop hit "OMG" serving as the team's soundtrack, the Mets fired their way into the National League Championship Series.
Now, two years later, Iglesias is bringing that passion and energy into a far different setting than the baseball diamond, just down the road on Broadway.
The 36-year-old will become the first Major League Baseball player to perform on Broadway when he takes the role of Narrator in "Buena Visa Social Club" for a six-week stint starting on Aug. 27 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
"It's very smooth. The energy, it's an excellent musical. I'm surrounded by great teammates over there," Iglesias said before throwing out the first pitch ahead of the Mets' game on Tuesday at Citi Field. "They support me on a daily basis. They know this is totally new for me.

Jun. 18—MITCHELL — The Palace City 14-and-under baseball team split a home doubleheader against Yankton on Wednesday at Drake Field. PCB won the first game 13-9 in six innings and lost the second game 16-5 in four innings.
It was all PCB early, scoring multiple runs in each of the first three innings to go ahead 8-0. Yankton scored four runs in the top of the fifth, and Mitchell answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Preston Maeschen and Keniel Padilla each tallied three hits and three RBIs, as Isaac Fischer also drove in three runs on one hit and one walk. Meade Schlimgen and Oaklee Cwach contributed two hits apiece. Gavin Auch was the winning pitcher, hurling five innings in his start.
For Yankton, Brody Wrage, Karter Reifenrath, Colin Frazee and William Schoenfelder had two hits apiece.
In the second game, the PCB offense that erupted earlier in the day was limited to three hits but worked 10 walks. Maeschen had two hits and scored twice, and Micah Bennett had the remaining hit. Schlimgen, Fischer, Auch and Kristopher Hatwan drew two walks apiece.
