WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Olympian charged with deliberately damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is seeking access to all of the closed-door testimony that led to his indictment, pointing to "irregularities" in those grand jury proceedings.
In a court filing Monday, David Hearn's attorneys requested an order for the government to turn over a complete transcript of all grand jury proceedings. They also want prosecutors to disclose the legal instructions they gave to grand jurors about the elements of Hearn's alleged crime.
Hearn pleaded not guilty earlier this month to one felony count of property destruction and has a trial scheduled to start Sept. 28 in D.C. Superior Court. The charge, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years upon conviction, accuses Hearn of causing at least $1,000 in damage to the pool.
But his lawyers question whether prosecutors properly presented the grand jury with adequate evidence to support the amount of damage alleged in Hearn's indictment. A National Park Service official testified that the pool already was damaged before Hearn allegedly touched it, couldn't quantify any damage attributable to Hearn and said the same repairs would have been required regardless of his conduct, defense attorneys said.
"The witness's testimony established that the pool had substantial preexisting damage requiring repair before any alleged conduct by Mr. Hearn," his lawyers wrote. "According to the witness, the pool was leaking more than one million gallons of water per week; its expansion joints had exceeded their service life; and the liner already contained a rip."

Americans spend over $600 billion per year on remodeling their homes. Upgrading and repairing your home can protect its market value and make your living ******* e more comfortable. But it can also be expensive, and figuring out a way to pay for it isn't always straightforward.

JD Wetherspoon issued another profit warning after sales came in weaker than expected and costs kept rising across food, labor, repairs, energy and business rates. Like-for-like sales rose 4% in the 12 weeks to July 19, but that was not enough to offset margin pressure or satisfy investors hoping the World Cup and warm weather would deliver a bigger pub rush. Shares fell sharply. The punters are still showing up. The profits are not keeping pace.
Wetherspoons warned that full-year profits are likely to come in below market expectations when it reports results in October. The company blamed "marginally lower sales than anticipated" in the final quarter and higher costs across food, labor, repairs, energy and business rates.
Like-for-like sales rose 4% in the 12 weeks to July 19. Year-to-date like-for-like sales were up 4.2%. That is growth, but not enough for a pub chain that investors hoped would benefit from the FIFA World Cup, warm weather and customers heading out to watch matches.
Shares fell around 9% to 10% after the update.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch on Tuesday, July 22, for all Five Boroughs, plus Nassau County and parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.

According to the National Weather Service, a tornado watch means "tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area" and advises those in the affected area to "be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching."

While some tornado damage is minor, like broken windows or snapped tree branches, a Category F5 tornado can have wind speeds over 300 mph and tear a home right off its foundation.
A tornado can wreak havoc on a home, and one way to be ready is by having adequate insurance coverage. A homeowners insurance policy can help cover the cost of repairs and replace items damaged in the storm, but not all wind damage is treated equally, and there are some caveats to what a policy will and won't cover.
Most standard homeowners insurance policies include coverage for wind-related damage, like tornadoes. Here's a breakdown of what's usually covered.
Dwelling coverage. This part of the policy helps cover damage to a home's actual structure. So, whether a tornado rips off a few shingles or levels the entire house, dwelling coverage can pay for repairs or a rebuild (up to policy limits).

WASHINGTON (AP) — The newly drained Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool's bottom surface has noticeably faded since it was lined with a protective coating in a color President Donald Trump called "American flag blue" this spring.
An **** ociated Press reporter and photographer viewed the fenced-off Reflecting Pool on Wednesday from the top of the Washington Monument. The new liner appears grayer than when the pool was repainted and refilled with water in early June. Debris that had been visible earlier this week after the pool was drained is now largely gone, after work crews removed it.
Trump's problem-plagued effort to revamp the landmark has stretched well past his initial goal of having the Reflecting Pool ready by July 4 for the nation's 250th birthday.
The president at first suggested his renovations would cost $1.5 million, but the bill ballooned to more than $16 million by June.
Trump had said the repairs would last a century, but within days of the project's initial completion last month, the water was beset by an algae bloom and pieces of the new coating appeared to be peeling off the bottom.

Crystin Liboma's childhood dream was to own a home. At 26 years old, she moved out of her parents' house into her first home purchase in Delaware. Then, she was slammed with major home repairs that left her struggling to pay her mortgage and several thousand dollars in credit card debt.
Three years after buying her first home in 2017, Liboma found relief in the form of a mortgage refinance. By refinancing from a mid-4%, 30-year mortgage to a 3.38%, 20-year mortgage, Liboma set herself on stronger financial footing.
Now 35 years old, the healthcare consultant has learned a few lessons about dealing with unexpected costs, along with one thing you can control but might not realize — your mortgage rate.
There are many uncontrollable costs when it comes to homeownership, including maintenance, rising property taxes and high utility bills. Naomi Peden, a housing counselor at Money Management International, helps people who are struggling to pay their mortgage. But financial stability begins before move-in day.
"One of the benefits of being a homeowner is the fact that you're stabilizing a portion of your housing cost," she tells clients during pre-purchase counseling. "That portion is the principal and interest payment."

NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump administration will not seek new bids to repair the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Sunday as he faced new questions about the troubled project and the taxpayer money involved.
Like President Donald Trump, Burgum said he was 100% sure that vandals caused the damage to the century-old Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. Trump has charged that a 350-foot gash was cut into the pool's liner in the midst of recent renovations, while Burgum described it as multiple cuts adding up to that figure. He also said the pool would have to be at least partially drained in the coming week to finish the repairs.
The repairs will not be opened up to new contractors, he said.
"We'll use the same company, because they did a fantastic job," Burgum told CNN's "State of the Union." "Thankfully, the vandalism was small. It was bad. I mean, it could cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair, so then it could fall into a felony ... just like damaging any other government property could. But the job that was done to fix the Reflecting Pool was done extremely well."
Trump this spring pledged to beautify the Reflecting Pool before the nation's 250th birthday celebrations on July Fourth. Water was drained and the Republican president directed that the bottom be painted a color he called "American flag blue." But after the site was restored, the water was plagued by an algae bloom for more than a week, and pieces of the new coating have appeared to be peeling off the bottom.

New signals showing the health of the private credit market emerged in the second quarter of 2026, indicating a changed landscape as lenders and investors alike reassessed their exposure to the alternative ***** et class and once-favored sectors.
The war in Iran stymied hopes for a return of M&A and buyout activity that seemed to be taking shape in late 2025. This development compounded existing negativity for private credit in the wake of a rough start to 2026, after the release of Anthropic's Claude Cowork fueled a global sell-off of publicly traded software and IT companies and raised concerns about business models of software-as-a-service companies.
Matt Harvey, head of middle-market direct lending for PGIM's private capital business, said that prior to the US attack on Iran, reduced uncertainty over tariff policy had led to a burst of direct-lending activity, which amounted to "pent-up demand." For PGIM, Q4 2025 was the firm's busiest quarter on record. PGIM's direct lending business focuses on "real economy" borrowers, such as food and beverage; consumer services that are staples, such as home repairs; value-add industrial services and products, such as distribution logistics; and certain areas of healthcare. The business has little exposure to software. PGIM focuses on midsize companies generating EBITDA of $25-75 million.
"Valuations are starting to become a little more realistic," Harvey said. "Our pipeline has never been fuller on deals ready to go."
Pricing on a typical non-sponsored loan financing is approximately S+500, with 40-50% loan-to-value, 4x leverage, 60% equity, and 1-2 covenants, according to Harvey. This spread is wider than it was a year ago, he said.

SEOUL, July 1 (Reuters) - South Korea's Oceans Ministry said on Wednesday the cargo vessel Namu, operated by HMM, would exit ‌the Strait of Hormuz in mid-July at the earliest once ‌the damage sustained in an attack in May was repaired.
The bulk carrier's hull was hit near the stern in the attack, which Seoul said on May 27 probably involved an Iranian anti-ship missile, summoning the Iranian ambassador to share the results of its investigation and lodge a protest.
Saeed Koozechi, Iran's ‌ambassador to South Korea, denied Tehran's involvement, the Yonhap news agency reported, and South Korea later said it could not conclusively determine who was responsible or whether the attack was intentional.
There are currently two vessels stuck in the Strait of Hormuz, including Namu, with 35 crew members on board, Nam Jae-heon, vice oceans minister, told a press briefing on ‌Wednesday. Nam added that 21 South Korean-operated vessels had passed safely through the strait since Washington and Tehran signed a ceasefire two weeks ago.
HMM is paying for the repairs, a ministry official said at the briefing.

A dramatic and prolonged Saturday at Watkins Glen International culminated in historic lap times and a significantly reshaped racing line through the famous "Bus Stop" chicane ahead of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.
During the late stages of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge support race on the 3.4-mile, 11-turn natural terrain road course, a piece of curbing detached at the entry to Turn 5. The loose curb severely damaged a wheel on a Turner Motorsports entry, ruining a likely strong finish for the team and forcing track officials into immediate action. Extensive track repairs delayed the subsequent WeatherTech Championship qualifying session by two hours and 40 minutes, pushing it until after another scheduled IMSA support series race.
In response to the safety hazard, track officials opted to completely pull up the curbs in that section for the qualifying sessions. The sudden modification transformed the characteristics of the chicane, leading to shattered track records in both the GTP and GTD Pro classes.
Officials confirmed that the curbing will not be replaced ahead of Sunday's main event; instead, the area will be painted overnight to ensure proper driver visibility.
Following the marathon session, pole-sitters from various classes shared how the sudden track alterations impacted their approach and what they anticipate for race day.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani barreled into City Hall vowing to tackle the city's notoriously high cost of living, partly by fulfilling a campaign promise repeated with almost monomaniacal zeal in social media ads, speeches and rallies: "As your next mayor, I will freeze your rent."
On Thursday evening, a board he controls is poised to make good on that signature pledge.
The city's Rent Guidelines Board, an independent panel of mayoral appointees, is poised to approve a rent freeze for people living in about 1 million rent-stabilized apartments.
The vote, while expected, is a big win for Mamdani, allowing him to beat back skepticism over his ability to deliver on his affordability agenda. And it came just two days after he made a splash as a budding progressive kingmaker when three congressional candidates he endorsed won their races in stunning fashion, unseating two Democratic incumbents and bucking the party establishment.
Real estate groups say a rent freeze would pinch landlords, leaving them struggling to afford routine maintenance or other repairs. They say property owners have also been hit by rising costs and need to keep pace with inflation. Critics of rent regulation also argue that the policy leads to higher rental costs for non-stabilized units.

After a blitz of congressional redistricting ahead of the midterm elections, a national battle for partisan control is about to enter a new phase that could affect representation on everything from tax rates to social safety net programs, teacher salaries, housing regulations and local road repairs.
Georgia's Republican-led Legislature will convene June 17 for a special session focused on redistricting for the 2028 elections. The agenda includes new voting districts not only for Congress, but also for the state House and Senate — and potentially even the state's utility regulatory commission.
It will mark the first time since a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling weakened minority voting protections that a state legislature will attempt to redraw its own districts. Mississippi Republicans and New York Democrats also could undertake legislative redistricting before their 2027 and 2028 elections, respectively.
Ir remains to be seen, though, how many legislatures will follow, and whether the outburst of mid-decade redistricting will extend down to county commissions, city councils and school boards that make myriad decisions affecting people's lives. The impact could be widespread.
"The stakes here are not political, they are deeply human," said Joe Kennedy III, founder of Groundwork Project, a nonprofit that supports local civil rights and democracy organizations.

June 1 (Reuters) - Damage to a Blue Origin launch pad from the spectacular explosion of the company's giant New Glenn rocket ‌during a test firing of its engines last week will "take ‌some serious time" to repair, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman told CNBC on Monday.
A 2028 time frame was "within the realm" of possibility, he said in an interview at CNBC's CEO Council Summit, the network reported.
The powerful two-stage vehicle erupted in a colossal fireball while bolted to the launch tower on Thursday during ‌what was supposed to have been a routine static "hot-fire" test in preparation for its fourth flight to orbit since January 2025.
The mishap came at a critical time for the Blue Origin rocket and Amazon satellite ventures of billionaire Jeff Bezos, who is seeking to compete on a more equal footing with Elon Musk's ******* eX, the world's leading private ******* e launch service.
Company ‌and industry sources said over the weekend that the explosion had left the launch pad "practically destroyed" and in need of repairs that engineers expect will disrupt operations for at least six months.
