A California teenager pleaded guilty Friday to repeatedly kicking a sea lion in the face and chasing the animal as it tried to escape, according to video of the attack.
Tyler Muehl, 18, who lives in the San Diego seaside neighborhood of La Jolla, entered his plea in a federal courtroom to a misdemeanor violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act's prohibition on harassing wildlife, the Justice Department said.
"Federal crime. Federal consequences," U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon wrote in a statement.

The PGA Tour isn't leaving Torrey Pines any time soon.
As expected, the La Jolla, California, stop will remain on the calendar, though under a different – albeit familiar – name beginning in 2027. The Sentry, which transitions from its former home at Kapalua, will be contested Jan. 27-30, 2027, a week after the season-opening American Express, and then become part of the Championship Series in 2028.
The PGA Tour has already announced two other Championship-level tournaments: the longstanding Travelers Championship and a new event sponsored by Sompo, which will be played in Napa, California, next summer before relocating to another market.
A complete 2028 Championship Series schedule is expected to be released in late January and include 23 to 24 events, including the majors, Players Championship, reimagined playoffs and Cup events.
This season's Sentry at Kapalua was canceled due to ongoing drought conditions, though the PGA Tour has since scrapped its Hawaiian Swing while repurposing the Sony Open as a PGA Tour Champions event.

A former college soccer player has been identified as the 26-year-old woman found dead in the waters off San Diego's La Jolla Shores Beach as investigators work to determine what happened.
Emergency personnel responded around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after reports of an unresponsive person floating in shallow water, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said. Bryn Waite was ****** ounced dead at the scene.
The body was found near the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, FOX 5 San Diego reported.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Federal wildlife authorities are investigating after a video appeared to show a person kicking a protected sea lion at a beach in California.
A spokesperson for the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident but declined to provide additional details Sunday.
The video appears to show a person throwing kicks at the sea lion at La Jolla Cove in San Diego as at least one other person can be heard laughing in the background. The person follows the sea lion, throwing more kicks at the animal as it tries to scoot away before the video ends.
"NOAA Fisheries' Office of Law Enforcement is investigating reports of a video on social media that shows an interaction between an individual and sea lion, allegedly in La Jolla Cove," a spokesperson for the agency said. "In the video, the individual appears to be kicking the sea lion. This is an ongoing investigation, and we cannot provide further details at this time."
The person in the video has not been publicly identified.

Using the blood of a 56-year-old woman vaccinated against measles, scientists have isolated a fighting force of four potent virus-blocking antibodies that could pave the way toward a treatment for people exposed to the highly contagious respiratory disease making a comeback in the United States.
A safe, highly effective vaccine for measles has been available since the 1960s, and the U.S. officially eliminated the disease in 2000, with sporadic cases and outbreaks. But dropping vaccination rates have sparked large outbreaks in multiple states, and the country is edging closer to the virus spreading freely again-which puts more people at risk.
New ways to block or treat measles would be particularly important for people who are immunocompromised and babies under the age of 1, because they are not eligible for the vaccine, leaving them unprotected amid a growing number of cases.
“Measles was a problem that was solved. Until it wasn’t solved anymore,” said Erica Ollmann Saphire, president of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology who led the study published Thursday in the journal Cell Host & Microbe. But she and other scientists stressed that this approach was not a substitute for a vaccine.
