Kate Middleton had an important royal quietly rooting for her before she and Prince William officially announced their marriage. As their relationship grew serious, one senior royal reportedly approved of William's choice. He also had some advice for Kate about handling life in the spotlight. That advice may have helped shape how she approached royal life.
Royal biographer Gyles Brandreth revealed to RadarOnline that Prince Philip was concerned about the effect intense publicity could have on people entering royal life. However, he was reportedly reassured that William had chosen a "level-headed girl" as his wife.
Philip's advice to Kate centered on an important distinction: the public attention surrounding a royal isn't necessarily about the individual. In his book, "Philip: The Final Portrait," Brandreth quoted Philip as saying, "If you believe the attention is for you, for you personally, you're going to end up in trouble."
He explained that the attention was actually about the role, adding, "The attention is for your role, what you do, what you're supporting. It isn't for you as an individual. You are not a celebrity. You are representing the royal family. That's all." This advice also sheds light on how Kate has handled life in the royal spotlight.
He reportedly told her not to focus on the cameras. Instead, he urged her to focus on the people she met. Brandreth said he had been on a walkabout with Kate and observed, "She does not look at the camera." He added that when interviewed, "Catherine talks about the matter in hand, never about herself."

"When you're old, you don't give a toss what anyone thinks, really, so you feel very free. You can have a snooze in the afternoon, and ****** ody thinks that's odd."
Dame Prue Leith is celebrating her perceived joys of the golden years as she prepares to discuss "Growing Old Disgracefully" with fellow authors Gyles Brandreth and Kathy Lette.
The trio will take to the stage at this year's Cheltenham Literature Festival on 15 October to prove to the audience ageing is "not the dreaded thing" it is made out to be, the former Bake Off judge said.
Dame Prue added: "You come into your own, you don't care what people think, you're not going to change. And so the world has to just put up with it."

Did I hear Gyles Beckford correctly on RNZ business news saying that Standard & Poors' reaction to your budget was to give NZ's economy a negative outlook?
