It appears Kyle Shanahan will pass Bill Walsh. And keep on going and going.
The San Francisco 49ers head coach signed a contract extension in the offseason, Netflix's Tom Pelissero reported, although his previous deal – that owner Jed York said on March 30 that he was through 2028 – wasn't close to expiring. The length of this new deal has not yet been disclosed.
"I think Kyle's got three years left (on his contract)," York said then. "I want Kyle to be here for a long time. He's been here for a long time. I want him to be here even longer."
Shanahan, 46, will match Walsh as the longest-tenured 49ers head coach if he finishes his 10th season with the team in 2026. Shanahan and the Rams' Sean McVay are the NFL's second-longest tenured head coaches. They trail only Kansas City's Andy Reid, who is in his 14th season with the Chiefs.
Shanahan has an 83-67 regular-season record with the 49ers and a 9-5 mark in the postseason. His regular-season win total ranks third in franchise history behind George Seifert (98) and Walsh (92). His postseason total ranks third behind Seifert and Walsh, who each have 10. Shanahan's playoff winning percentage (.643) ranks ninth in NFL history (minimum 10 games). In Shanahan's first nine seasons, the 49ers won two NFC **** les, three NFC West crowns, made five playoff appearances and had four 12-win seasons.
