SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Tammi Carr still remembers her son's glare from the sideline of his friends' game.
The Carr family had a rule. Their oldest son had to wait until seventh grade to play tackle football. They saw no need for him to take hits before then.
So CJ Carr and his friends stuck to flag football, coached by their dads, up until sixth grade, when the other parents let their sons switch to tackle.
"Just let me play!" CJ begged his parents. "Nope," they responded. He had to wait one more year. So CJ went to his friends' tackle football games that season and helped with the first-down sticks — sending darts with his eyes at his parents all the while — until they finally let him play the following year.
"I put the pads on, we played our first game, and I was like, 'I'm never taking this off,' " Carr said. "Like, I want to go to practice every day, all day. I want to watch film. I cannot get enough of the sport."
