The AA, Britain's largest and most historic motoring organisation, has held talks about a potential sale to Allianz for £5bn.
The German insurance giant has entered the race to acquire the AA after the company's private equity owners put it up for sale late last year.
TowerBrook Capital Partners, Warburg Pincus and Stonepeak are currently part of a consortium that own the self-styled "fourth emergency service".
A potential sale to Allianz, which was was first reported by Sky News, would see one of the UK's best-known heritage brands passing into German control.
Swedish private equity giant EQT is also reportedly considering a bid.
