All good things have to come to an end. All things that aren't so great tend to also have an expiration date. So it is with great understanding and precious little passion that sports fans learned today that the NFL is eliminating the Pro Bowl Games.
Look, life is too darn short to be negative all of the time. But poll 10 people and at least nine will tell you they have had better things to do than check in on the Pro Bowl Games, a somewhat competitive replacement for the actual football game that had been held since 1938.
Still, it's the end of an era.
So often the phrase "addition by subtraction" gets trotted out in conversation. It's overused because it is hard, at scale, to take something away and have things be better. This is a rare case where the idea applies, though.
The NFL will still honor 88 Pro Bowlers with an announcement in late December. Gone is any need to scramble for replacements when scores of players pass on the opportunity to be part of the festivities. In lieu of watching these guys play patty cake on the gridiron or, uh, dodgeball, we'll get to focus on their accomplishments and debate who earned the honor and who was snubbed.
