White Sox fans received a unique souvenir and took part in a papal-themed celebration during the White Sox-Reds game at Rate Field, where every fan was given a White Sox papal MITRE.
The giveaway, billed as a first-of-its-kind promotion, drew enthusiastic reactions from fans who embraced the headwear and the connection to one of the team's most famous supporters.
"You look out. Everyone's got the hat. That's, like that's family," Sox fan Annie McClung said.
David Schulz said the event resonated beyond baseball.
"It's special. I mean, it's special for the whole city of Chicago," Schulz said.
