San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is expected to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a hernia and core muscle tear, according to reports.
Chapman, 33, will see specialist Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia on Sunday, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reported. The 10-year veteran will then likely have surgery on Tuesday.
"He's going to go see an expert in that field and be sure about what needs to be done," Giants manager Tony Vitello told reporters on Friday, via MLB.com. "Surgery's probably more likely than not."
"But I think getting squared away with that doctor and [being] 100% about what's the best path," he added. "If that is the path, it would be the end of his season on the field.
The Giants are 49-67 going into Saturday's play, placing them fourth in the NL West, 20 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
