India's red-ball tour of Sri Lanka got underway with a three-day practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo on Friday.
It will give Shubman Gill's squad a valuable opportunity to acclimatise to local conditions ahead of the Test series.
Day 1 delivered plenty of drama. Sri Lanka XI made a strong start, with Nishan Madushka and Ravindu Rasantha putting India's pacers under early pressure before the visitors eventually found their footing.
Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav then turned things around as they picked up two wickets each to drag India back into contention. The hosts closed the day at 363 for 8, which already leaves India with a substantial workload once their innings begins.
Meanwhile, Gill missed the entire opening day after injuring his right ring finger during practice, with KL Rahul stepping in to lead the side. Whether Gill will be fit enough to bat once India's innings starts remains the key question heading into day two.
