PLAYING THE CHAMPS: Today's game will be the third time that the Cubs have played back-to-back games against the teams that met in the previous year's World Series. In 2005, the season after the White Sox swept the Astros, the Cubs hosted the Sox on June 30-July2, then visited Houston the next three days. In both series, the Cubs lost the first two games and won the third. They outslugged the Sox, 15-11, then nipped the Astros, 1-0. In 2023, the season after the Astros beat the Phillies in six games, the Cubs lost three games at Houston on May 15-17. After a day off, they won at Philadelphia, 10-1, then lost, 12-3 and 2-1.
