The British Grand Prix showcased plenty of overtakes through the 52-lap race, but the last few laps of the race offered a major twist, leading to the race ending behind the safety car.
The last ten laps of the British GP saw some major events, starting with Kimi Antonelli, who was well-positioned to challenge race leader Charles Leclerc for a win, but a damaged wheel shield on his W17 Mercedes F1 car led to handling issues. That ensured Antonelli received a five-second time penalty for crossing track limits.
He pitted twice due to the problem, with the team even changing the car's nose, but that brought him down to P10. He was now fighting for a single point. But on Lap 48, Max Verstappen, who had just lost second place to Lewis Hamilton, spun out and beached his car in the gravel. A delayed rear wing operation is suspected to have caused the spin. Red Bull has yet to reveal the real reason.
However, the incident triggered a safety car, prompting many teams to pit their cars for a tire swap for the last four laps. Ferrari brought both drivers into the pits during the safety car period. While Leclerc retained the lead, Hamilton's stop proved costly, as he lost second place to George Russell.
All cars followed the safety car eventually, and with the backmarkers asked to overtake and take their spot, a one-lap shootout was on the cards. The safety car was supposed to exit the track before the last lap, but something changed at the last moment, and the race ended under the safety car, with Leclerc taking the top spot, Russell taking second, and Hamilton finishing third.
