For more than two decades, the Top the Cops program has provided young drivers with a safe and exciting alternative to illegal street racing. Held at Sonoma Raceway, the program gives high school students the opportunity to race their own vehicles against uniformed police officers driving stock police cars. What makes the event unique is its combination of motorsport competition, community engagement, and public safety education.
Participants experience the thrill of drag racing in a controlled environment while learning the importance of keeping high speed driving off public roads. The program was created by retired law enforcement officer Kevin McKinnie, who recognised the growing problem of illegal street racing in and around Santa Rosa, California. His goal was simple but effective. Rather than telling young people not to race, he wanted to provide them with a safer place to enjoy their passion for speed.
Running annually from April through August, the program has become a popular tradition that attracts enthusiastic young drivers. For many participants, lining up next to a police vehicle at the starting line creates excitement, nervous anticipation, and a strong competitive spirit. The opportunity to challenge law enforcement officers on equal terms adds an extra level of motivation and fun. By moving racing activities from public roads to a professional racetrack, the program helps reduce dangerous behaviour while promoting responsible driving habits among young motorists.
Beyond the racing itself, the initiative has become an important bridge between young people and law enforcement. Organisers believe that positive interaction helps build understanding and trust between communities and police officers. Participants often discover that officers share their enthusiasm for automobiles and motorsports, creating opportunities for meaningful conversations beyond the racetrack.
The atmosphere is competitive but friendly, with both sides focused on enjoying the experience rather than simply winning. Many students describe the satisfaction of passing a police car on the drag strip as one of the highlights of the event. At the same time, officers use the program to encourage safe driving practices and demonstrate the consequences of reckless racing on public streets.
