Christy Carlson Romano knows how to play a role, but finding herself has proven to be her greatest performance.
The Emmy-nominated actress and Disney Channel alum looks back on her turbulent upbringing in the spotlight in her debut memoir "Once Upon a Trainwreck: The Fall and Rise of a Child Star" (out now).
Romano, alongside fellow Disney darlings Shia LaBeouf, Hilary Duff and Raven-Symoné, epitomized teen stardom in the early 2000s, appearing in beloved TV shows and movies such as "Even Stevens," "Cadet Kelly" and "Kim Possible."
Despite her success, Romano often felt adrift in young Hollywood, intimidated by the upper echelons of prime-time dramas and glossy magazine covers.
"Looking back, I was really just trying to fit into whatever opportunity was thrown my way, rather than kind of create my own identity so that opportunities would find me in a different light," Romano tells USA TODAY. "I didn't have a stylist or a publicist, and I didn't really invest in myself the way that maybe I should have, to get to know exactly who I wanted to be, even if [that] changed over the years."

Rapper Chingy has been in the spotlight for over two decades, and in a recent interview, the "Right Thurr" performer made a revelation that shocked everyone. Speaking with blogger Jason Lee, Chingy revealed that he's a father of four, including Isaiah Russell-Bailey, a known actor who has appeared alongside Tia Mowry and Raven-Symoné. Shortly after, Chingy reportedly commented on his strained relationship with Bailey and claimed that his mother manipulated the young actor into disliking him. Bailey clapped back after a few days with a post that has since gone viral.
"I've stayed quiet about my relationship with my father because I've never felt the need to share that aspect of my life publicly," he wrote. "But after seeing his comments, I feel compelled to speak for myself."
Bailey added that Chingy's statements about their relationship aren't an "accurate representation." He continued, "Saying something publicly doesn't make it true. You cannot rewrite years of absence, neglect, or lack of involvement with a few paragraphs about love, support, and being there for your child."
Bailey didn't stop there. He said he clearly understood what his relationship with his father looked like growing up. "I know who was present and who wasn't," he wrote. "I know who supported me and who didn't."
Before his post, Bailey, known for his roles in Netflix's "Family Reunion" and Disney's "Raven's Home," praised his mother, Brittany Perry-Russell, an actor and choreographer, for always supporting him.

Andrew Symonds once produced one of the rarest scoring feats in Test cricket, collecting eight runs from a single delivery during Australia's Test against New Zealand at the Gabba in Brisbane in 2008-09.
The bizarre sequence involved an all-run four followed by four overthrows, with New Zealand fast bowler Iain O'Brien at the centre of the drama. There was an added twist to the incident, as O'Brien had seen Symonds dropped off the previous delivery before eventually dismissing him just two ****** later.
Australia were 124 for four in the 46th over after Ricky Ponting had decided to bat in Brisbane.
O'Brien opened the over with a bouncer, which Symonds ducked under. The bowler went short again with his next delivery, and this time Symonds pulled the ball towards mid-wicket.
However, Aaron Redmond put down the chance.
O'Brien responded as fast bowlers often do after a missed opportunity, sending down another short delivery. This time, the ball was outside off-stump and Symonds attacked it ferociously with a pull.
The enormous Gabba outfield slowed the ball down, but Symonds and Michael Clarke had already completed three runs by the time Redmond got to it.
The pair then decided to push for another run, hoping to take advantage of the throw.
That decision produced chaos.
New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum moved across to collect the return. He gathered the ball, turned and threw it towards the stumps, only to discover that Symonds had already made his ground.
There was another problem for New Zealand. ****** ody was positioned behind the wicketkeeper to stop the throw.
The ball therefore continued all the way to the boundary. Symonds had effectively turned a pull shot into an extraordinary eight-run haul.
Umpire Rudi Koertzen then signalled the total by raising eight fingers, meaning eight runs were added to Australia's score and Symonds' tally.
It was two more than the figure commonly described as the maximum possible from a single delivery and even one more than the total India received in a penalty-run incident against Bangladesh at Chattogram.
Symonds' eight-run delivery was only the fourth known instance of eight runs being scored from a single ball in Test cricket at that point.
The first recorded example came in Melbourne during the 1928-29 series, which was also the final Test of Don Bradman's first series.
England's Patsy Hendren scored eight after completing four runs and then benefiting from four overthrows off Australian debutant Percy Hornibrook.
Another unusual eight-run delivery occurred in Melbourne during the 1980-81 season.
New Zealand's John Wright was the beneficiary on that occasion. He ran four before four overthrows followed after Rod Marsh collected the fielder's return and threw the ball towards the stumps. The throw escaped and Wright picked up the additional runs off Lenny Pascoe's delivery.

NASHVILLE - "It's Sure Gonna Hurt" - After nearly two decades, Rayna and Deacon face the facts of their storied and often tempestuous relationship. Scarlett makes a startling self-discovery in between tour dates while Gunnar performs with one of his idols, rock-music legend Sir Elton John, who guest stars as himself. Luke stops by "The View" to trumpet a worthy cause-before a family emergency pulls his focus. Elsewhere, Juliette struggles to make a connection, and Layla launches her album at The Bluebird. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Raven Symon and Paula Faris guest star as themselves on "Nashville," WEDNESDAY, MAY 18 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on the Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images Television Network. Hayden Panettiere, known to many of us as the cheerleader who couldn't be broken on Heroes and the country western star who came apart on Nashville, died this week in her South Carolina home at the age of 36. She left behind an eleven-year-old daughter called Kaya. Her cause of death is not yet known.
The public response to her death has followed a familiar refrain: the tragic trajectory of a child star whose bright light cast longer shadows. But Panettiere's story is also one of a young woman who fought hard to reclaim her narrative, and was willing to drag the darkest parts of it into the light, even when doing so made people uncomfortable.
Her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, detailed a near-death labor and postpartum psychological spiral, an opioid and alcohol addiction that predated her daughter's birth by more than a decade, and the very difficult decision to give her daughter's father, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, full custody of their daughter in 2018. It was a story that gave a voice to a subject and a stigma that so many women have been unable to face openly for fear of shame, judgment and retribution. And perhaps that makes her sudden death all the more tragic, and opens up an important question that deserves to be confronted: what, exactly, do we mean when we say "good mother"?
