Aug. 16—MITCHELL — The Clark Traders have spent the 2026 postseason finding ways to win games they probably had no business winning.
On Friday night at Cadwell Park, they found another one. After trailing by four runs early, committing five errors and being outhit 12-8, the Traders continued their remarkable postseason run by rallying past the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks 7-6 in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament semifinals.
And with that, Clark is headed somewhere no Clark baseball team has gone in 41 years.
The Traders will play in the Class B state amateur championship game for the first time in club history at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cadwell Park, following the Class A championship between the Harrisburg Woodies and Renner Monarchs. The last Clark team to reach a Class B state championship game was the Clark Cubs 41 years ago.
"We were down early, just like we have been in every single game this tournament, and the guys just stuck with it," Clark active manager and third-base coach David Grantham said. "The perseverance, the patience, and again, the breaks were going our way. They all believe in themselves and each other."

Aug. 9—MITCHELL — A pile of defensive miscues didn't help Four Corners' day at the Class B state amateur baseball tournament Sunday in the first round as Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks rang up the runs to the tune of a 13-2 first-round victory.
Four Corners had 10 errors on defense and the Wood Ducks had 10 hits in the contest, as the Wood Ducks had scored three runs each in the third, fifth and eighth inning and punctuated the victory with four runs in the ninth.
Eight Wood Ducks had at least one hit in the game. Curtis Flint had four RBIs, and Keaton Vessells had a triple and drove in two runs. C.J. Den Boer had two hits and Brodie Herr scored three times for the Wood Ducks.
Drew Eldeen earned the win on the hill for the Wood Ducks, tallying five strikeouts while allowing four hits, two runs and pitching four innings. Ben Honkomp threw the final five innings and allowed two hits and struck out five Four Corners hitters.
The Wood Ducks' win makes it six of seven Cornbelt League state qualifiers to reach the round of 16. The Ducks (17-6) will take on fellow Cornbelt squad — the Flandreau Cardinals — at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the second round.

No arrests have been made in the investigation of a no-kill animal rescue in Northern California, where authorities said they recovered more than 100 dog remains, many of which showed evidence of bullet fragments.
The investigation began after "two concerned citizens" reported allegations of felony animal abuse and potential fraud involving Miranda's Rescue in Fortuna, California, on April 22, according to Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal. Those citizens told authorities they believed dogs were being buried in a field behind the facility and later turned over eight deceased dogs they had recovered from the property, the sheriff said.
"Miranda's Rescue advertises itself as an animal sanctuary and entered into agreements with animal shelters and rescue organizations to provide a place where animals could either be adopted out or live out their lives in the sanctuary," Honsal said at a news conference June 29.
"The allegations in this case are Miranda's Rescue received money for animal placements, but later euthanized (the animals) and (they) were not adopted out or allowed to live out their lives in their sanctuary as represented," he added.
Authorities served a search warrant at the rescue on May 1, seizing electronics, business records, financial records, firearms, and other evidence, according to the sheriff. Investigators later conducted a second search warrant operation on June 23 that included excavating portions of the property for evidence of dogs buried in mass graves.

Abernathy retired as the boys basketball coach at Humboldt High in West Tennessee in March. The school announced his death.
Abernathy replaced Larry Reid as the TSU coach in 1990 after spending 13 seasons as an ***** istant on Dale Brown's staff at LSU. Abernathy played a key role in helping Brown recruit future NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal to LSU.
Abernathy spent two seasons at Tennessee State. The Louisville, Kentucky native posted a 12-43 record before resigning in 1991.
