ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Wyatt Langford had a tying RBI double in the 10th inning, then scored the winning run on third baseman Denzer Guzman's throwing error as the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Friday night.
Guzman had opened the top of the 10th with an RBI double to put the Angels ahead in the eighth MLB game this season that was scoreless going into extra innings.
With two outs in the bottom of the 10th after an intentional walk, Guzman made a nice stop on a grounder by Ezequiel Duran. But his wide throw to second base trying to get an inning-ending forceout allowed Langford to race home.
Tyler Alexander (4-2) pitched the 10th and struck out two for the win.
Ben Joyce (0-1) gave up two hits and two runs, neither earned, in 2/3 of an inning.

Shane Drohan turned in six strong innings in a bounce-back outing, while the Brewers broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning fueled by home runs from Brice Turang and Jake Bauers. After dropping two of three to the Giants to open their California road trip, Milwaukee got back on track tonight with a 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
After neither team managed to score in the first, Bauers and Garrett Mitchell led off the top of the second with back-to-back singles off Angels starter Ryan Johnson. Up next was Cooper Pratt, who slapped a line drive into left field. With Bauers rounding third, Angels left fielder Jose Siri charged the ball in an attempt to gun him down at the plate but couldn't come up with it cleanly. By the time the dust settled, Pratt had reached second, Mitchell advanced to third, and Bauers had scored the Brewers' first run of the game.
Neither team scored again until the fifth, when Johnson walked Pratt to open the frame. Turang then hit a towering fly ball that had just enough carry to clear the center-field fence.
Johnson continued to unravel, allowing Jackson Chourio to single before walking William Contreras to put another rally in motion. He managed just one more out—a sharp lineout off the bat of Christian Yelich—before being pulled in favor of Jose Fermín, whose second pitch to Bauers, a slider low and inside, hung just long enough. Bauers crushed it 424 feet into the seats to make it 6-0, a lead that proved to be more than enough with Drohan on the mound.
Drohan was perfect the first time through the order. In the fourth, he allowed back-to-back singles to Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel before bouncing back to get Jorge Soler to ground into an inning-ending double play. He surrendered a two-run homer to Denzer Guzman in the fifth, bringing the Angels within four, but retired the side in order in the sixth to finish his night. After allowing five earned runs against Colorado in his previous outing, Drohan responded with one of his better starts of the season, earning his sixth win. He's now gone at least 5 2/3 innings in all six of his starts during the month of July.

Wasn't it 35 years ago when the Red-Hot Chili Peppers sang "Give it away, Give it away now?" That's exactly what the Angels did on this night. They gave it away; fortunately for Houston. Astros 6. Angels 4.
In the ninth inning, the Astros would do it by a matter of inches. First, Isaac Paredes would be slightly grazed by a pitch with the bases loaded which would tie things up. Moments later LaMonte Wade Jr., by the narrowest of margins, would draw a walk which gave Houston their first lead of the night. A fielding error by Angels reliever Sam Bachman would allow Yordan Alvarez to score an insurance run and that would be your final. It was an improbable comeback, just like Friday night in Chicago.
Even with the jubilation of the end result, much of the night was painted by a sad commentary. The Astros were fortunate to only be down by two runs at the end of the first inning. That was the boat the Astros found themselves in, which actually seemed like more like a sinking ship. The culprit once again was Tatsuya Imai, who allowed four walks and received the quick hook from Manager Joe Espada after tossing just 33 pitches. The issue was 21 of those pitches were ****** , which resulted in a disastrous start from Anaheim.
Upon Imai's departure, AJ Blubaugh would get Angels 3B Denzer Guzman to fly out to end the first frame, stranding three Angels runners. However, in the bottom of the third, Vaughn Grissom would drive in his second run of the night, hitting a solo shot to center field. It was Grissom's 7th home run of season. Josh Lowe would then reach on a throwing error by Jose Altuve. Moments later, Lowe would come around to score on a double by Jo Adell. By the time the third was in the books, the Angels had increased their lead to 4-0. Blubaugh would work 2 1/3 innings, allowing 2 hits, a run, while registering a strikeout.
In the fourth inning, Taylor Trammell would notch his fifth home run of the year on a two out blast to get the Astros on the board. In the bottom of the fourth, Christian Javier (W, 1-1) would enter in relief. Javier would go five innings, striking out seven while scattering three hits. Javier would strike out the side in the bottom of the 8th, throwing just 70 pitches through his performance. It's possible that Javier's outing will ultimately propel him back into the starting rotation next month.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Aroldis Chapman became the major leagues’ career leader in strikeouts as a reliever Friday night, toppling a record that had stood for more than half a century.
The Boston Red Sox’s 38-year-old left-hander didn’t do it with one of the triple-digit fastballs that have made him one of the most imposing pitchers of his generation and one of the most accomplished relievers in baseball history.
Instead, his high pitch to the Angels’ Denzer Guzman was clocked at a mere 98.6 mph — and Guzman still couldn’t get around in time.
“I feel very happy, very proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish,” Chapman said through an interpreter. “I just feel very satisfied right now.”
The strikeout was the 1,364th in Chapman’s 17-year career. It broke the record long held by Hoyt Wilhelm, the Hall of Famer whose 21-year career ended back in 1972, just five days shy of his 50th birthday.

Since entering MLB in 2010, Aroldis Chapman has been pumping a level of heat unseen in MLB history. Let's just say the strikeouts have followed.
With a strikeout of Denzer Guzman in the ninth inning of Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, the Boston Red Sox closer became the MLB all-time leader in strikeouts among relievers with 1,364 in his career. He broke a tie with Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm.
He got there with, naturally, a fastball.
Chapman doesn't throw with the 106 mph velocity that set a record early in his career anymore, but he has remained effective into his age-38 season. Friday was his 17th save of the season, and a scoreless inning lowered his ERA to 2.10.
That career has spanned seven different teams, with the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds as the primary employer of Chapman's services. He has been named to eight All-Star teams and won two World Series rings with the 2016 Chicago Cubs and 2023 Texas Rangers.

Aroldis Chapman Makes History: Red Sox Pitcher Breaks Reliever Strikeout Record originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
At 38 years old, Aroldis Chapman is still firing fastballs past hitters and making history.
On Friday night, Chapman moved to the top of the all-time reliever strikeout list, passing Hoyt Wilhelm to claim sole possession of the No. 1 spot. The Red Sox closer fittingly threw a pitch that nearly hit 100 mph on the radar gun, striking out Angels third baseman Denzer Guzman.
"It's cool. We've been waiting for that one," Boston interim manager Chad Tracy said after the game. "We got to celebrate him a little bit and show a video. What a career he's had. The cool thing is watching the video, and you're seeing him at a young age throwing 102, and he's still doing it. It's just incredible."
Amid a rough season for the Red Sox, Chapman has been a bright spot, closing out games with brutal efficiency. He did it again in the ninth inning against Los Angeles, earning his 17th save of the 2026 season.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Aroldis Chapman set the major league record for relief strikeouts after rookie Jake Bennett yielded five hits while pitching into the eighth inning for the Boston Red Sox in a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.
The 38-year-old Chapman broke Hoyt Wilhelm's record with his 1,364th career strikeout as a reliever when he fanned Denzer Guzman leading off the ninth. The knuckleballing Wilhelm last pitched in 1972.
Chapman allowed back-to-back singles after his milestone strikeout, but got Jo Adell to ground into a double play to secure his 17th save.
Caleb Durbin hit a solo homer in the opener of a nine-game trip for the Red Sox, who have won six of eight.
In just his seventh career start, Bennett (3-3) struck out six with no walks while dominating the last-place Angels until the their two-run eighth.

Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson speaks to the media following a 1-0 win against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. | Teren Kowatsch/Roundtable Sports
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners needed just one run for starting pitcher Bryce Miller's seven-inning masterclass to result in a victory against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday at T-Mobile Park.
The Mariners swept the Angels with the 1-0 win, improved to 45-43 on the season and remained tied with the Texas Rangers for first place in the American League West.
"The way (Miller's) come out and attacked, the way he's used all his stuff and missed bats, he's just been so deep into games and has done what we've asked him and more," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said after the game Thursday. " ... It seems like every time out, he's not giving up a hit until about the fourth or fifth inning. That's just the way he's throwing the ball right now. He's really in a groove, he's really locked in."
Miller took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. His bid at the rare feat was disrupted by a bloop single hit by Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel. Another bloop hit by third baseman Denzer Guzman gave Miller two singles allowed for the game.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Pinch-hitter Jonah Heim launched a tying homer with two outs in the ninth and the Athletics allowed 11 straight runs before rallying from seven down to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 12-11 in 10 innings Friday night.
Zack Gelof started the comeback with an RBI single in the sixth, and the A's got two-run homers from Jacob Wilson in the seventh, Max Muncy in the eighth and Heim in the ninth to tie it 11-all.

In April, ESPN reported that free-agent defensive lineman Mike Pennel is a "person of interest" in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found on property Pennel previously owned in the Dominican Republic. Pennel called the report "fake news," and his lawyer said Pennel didn't know the woman.
ESPN now reports that Pennel did indeed know the woman.
Citing "interviews with people close to the victim and police records reviewed by ESPN," ESPN reports that Pennel "frequently spent time" with Carli Franchesca Guzmán Roche when Pennel was in the Dominican Republic.
She was reported missing on September 11, 2021. Her body was discovered in January 2026, when the new owner of the property was doing excavation work.
Pennel and his lawyer did not respond to "several messages" from ESPN seeking comment.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jose Altuve scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on a popout to shallow center field, and Houston Astros left fielder Brice Matthews threw out Mike Trout at home plate in the bottom half to preserve a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.
Christian Walker hit an RBI single for Houston off Kirby Yates with one out in the ninth, tying it 4-all. Walker also had an RBI double in the third.
Altuve began the 10th as the automatic runner at second base and moved to third on Matthews' bunt single. Sam Aldegheri (1-1) struck out Cam Smith and got Jake Meyers to pop out to a backpedaling Nick Madrigal behind second. Altuve tagged up and took off, sliding in safely at the plate when catcher Logan O'Hoppe couldn't come up with an in-between hop on Madrigal's throw home.
O’Hoppe was charged with an error on the play, and Meyers was not credited with an RBI.
Trout started the bottom of the 10th as the automatic runner on second, but was erased trying to score on a leadoff single by Jose Siri. Bryan Abreu then struck out Jo Adell and retired Denzer Guzman on a liner to left for his fourth save.

CJ Abrams can make Nationals/Expos history with All-Star nod originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams is having an elite season, so much so that it could earn him his second All-Star nod.
Among qualified shortstops, Abrams is second (.289) to Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez in batting average (.332), first in on-base percentage (.381), slugging percentage (.522), OPS (.933), tied with Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz in home runs (12) and tied for second with De La Cruz in hits (65).
Between Lopez and Abrams, one will be the National League's starting shortstop, but Abrams getting the nod would be historic for the Nationals, who were formerly the Montreal Expos.
Since the Expos founding in 1969, seven shortstops have played in MLB's All-Star Game, including Abrams: Trea Turner (2021), Ian Desmond (2012), Wil Cordero (1994), Hubie Brooks (1986 and 1987), and Cristian Guzmán (2008). Of all of them, none of them were named the starter, but according to MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan, Abrams has the best chance to be the first.
