He was the president of the Immortals, the Invincibles and the Amazing Ones. He oversaw **** les, Ballon d'Or wins and records. He was a president full of life, with AC Milan at heart. The Rossoneri fans loved him, his sporting opponents respected him. Silvio Berlusconi and his helicopter, Silvio Berlusconi and his vision.
He planned and brought together squads with a wealth of options so as to compete on all fronts, he desired and dreamed of playing attacking football at home and away, and he always held to the idea that one's opponent is an integral part of sport. He never made himself an enemy of anybody but was a fierce competitor, who required his opponents to be at the top of their game. He was not to be beaten with clenched fists. His vision of football was a game pleasing to the eye and soul, not dedicated to madness and violence. He always showed others that this was the way. He was the Presidentissimo of Italian football.
"Silvio, Milano loves you". That was the welcome from the fans that greeted him 37 years ago, when AC Milan were suffering, languishing, at risk of a worse fate. And he responded with that courageous, infectious smile. He made a lot of significant and very brave investments. He smiled in victory and in defeat. He brought first-place and podium finishes to AC Milan, though he was always gracious when the **** le went elsewhere.
Now, it's time for the great, unforgettable Cavaliere to take his final journey. On either side of the path, there will be a guard of honour from fans and directors, from coaches and players. His father Luigi will be waiting up there for him, as will Rosa, his mother. They will already be receiving him with a warm embrace and telling him how football fans are applauding him. No ifs, no buts, no maybes. Everyone united in applause, just as he would have wanted. Silvio, you are still loved here.

There is already a huge appetite for football on TV, and the excitement around AC Milan is building. Today marks the first training session on the outdoor pitches at Milanello, but Rossoneri fans have already marked the dates and times of the summer friendlies in their calendars. When, what time, on which channel... That anticipation is expected, even if history has shown that summer friendly results do not always reflect a team’s quality or predict how the season will unfold. From a statistical point of view, pre-season is mainly about building fitness, getting minutes, testing physical conditions and helping new signings settle in. With intense training sessions taking their toll, teams often take to the pitch with tired legs and the tempo is usually lower than in competitive games. Many of the biggest names also return shortly before the start of the official season due to international commitments, including the World Cup this year.
During the 2024 pre-season, Milan enjoyed a successful American tour, securing prestigious wins against the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Despite those impressive results, the official season that followed was marked by inconsistent performances. Some of the most iconic AC Milan teams, including those managed by Fabio Capello and Carlo Ancelotti, had disappointing pre-seasons, with heavy defeats and slow performances, only to click into gear once Serie A and European competitions began. Summer successes, summer setbacks: there are two particularly striking examples. In August 1993, Barcelona defeated AC Milan 3-0 in Oviedo, a result that would later be followed by renewed confidence as the Rossoneri went on to win the European Cup Final in Athens on 18 May 1994. The opposite example came in August 1997: spirits were high after a 3-1 victory over Juventus in the Luigi Berlusconi Trophy, but the league campaign that followed proved disappointing. Such is the unpredictable nature of summer...
