SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Preparations for the next men's World Cup have already begun for teams in Southeast Asia, just weeks after Spain clinched the 2026 ****** le.
The ASEAN Cup has kicked off in Phnom Penh, and host Cambodia has already lost its opening games 2-1 to Singapore and 5-1 to Indonesia in Group A.
The biennial tournament features 10 national teams from the region of 650 million, and there's more on the minds of coaches and players than the trophy on offer in late August.
With Asian qualification for the 2030 World Cup starting next year, Southeast Asia's soccer powerhouses such as Indonesia — the only team from the region to appear on the global stage, when it competed as the Dutch East Indies in 1938 — Thailand and Vietnam, have an opportunity to start preparations early.
ASEAN Football Federation president Khiev Sameth said getting another team from the region into the World Cup is within reach.

MANILA, July 22 (Reuters) - Australia's foreign minister said on Wednesday that Asian countries face a choice in how they respond to instances of aggressive conduct in the South China Sea that were of concern to Canberra.
A recent encounter in the South China Sea between China and the Philippines was a real concern, in addition to being destabilising and risky, Penny Wong said on the sidelines of a meeting led by the Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN.
"We are concerned about some of the aggression we are seeing," Wong said. "We are concerned about some of the destabilising conduct we are seeing."
"The countries of the region have a choice to make about how we all respond to that."
Wong was referring to an altercation on Monday in which Manila said one of its navy personnel was struck on the head. Beijing accused Manila of provoking the incident, resulting in both countries summoning each other's ambassadors.

Malaysia's CIMB Bank Berhad has introduced CIMB Private Wealth, a wealth segment targeted at affluent clients in ASEAN.
The Business Times reported that CIMB Group intends to roll out the private wealth business in Singapore and Thailand before the end of the year.
The move forms part of a wider plan to double wealth ****** ets under management by 2030.
The offering brings together institutional financial services, advisory support and wealth products aimed at helping clients with capital growth, ****** et protection and succession planning.
Under CIMB's Forward30 plan, the new segment will cater to a range of clients in ASEAN through investment, lending and protection products, as well as wealth advisory services.

M-DAQ Global, a fintech group specialising in foreign exchange (FX) and payment solutions, has signed agreements for a strategic integration with METech as it expands into Vietnam.
In a statement, M-DAQ Global said the move marks a "major step" in its plan to build a unified ASEAN Payments Hub that combines collections, FX conversion and payouts across multiple markets.
The integration will provide the Singapore-headquartered fintech with regulated payments infrastructure in Vietnam. This will enable the firm to process domestic collections and payments in Vietnamese Dong (VND).
Direct access to VND collection and payout rails will reduce its reliance on third-party providers, it added.
M-DAQ Global said the METech integration follows previous regional developments involving EasyPay in Malaysia and Wallex in Indonesia.

July 2 (Reuters) - A consortium including Microsoft and telecom startup Lightstorm plans to build a new undersea cable linking India with Malaysia and Singapore as technology firms compete to expand AI and cloud infrastructure in India, one of the world's fastest-growing data markets.
The consortium, whose other members include Tata Communications, Singapore Telecommunications, Singapore's ASEAN Cableship and ***** an's NEC Corporation, will construct the I-2SEA cable to support AI, cloud and hyperscale workloads, the companies said on Thursday.
They did not provide additional details including the investment size.
The network will span 3,600 km and have landing stations in Machilipatnam in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, where Meta and Alphabet have announced data centers.

MANILA, June 1 (Reuters) - The Philippines and Vietnam are elevating their ties to an enhanced strategic partnership, reaffirming that shared commitment to peace and stability in the South China Sea is "non-negotiable," President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said on Monday during a state visit by Vietnam's top leader To Lam to Manila.
Marcos said there is no doubt the Philippines and Vietnam share a common interest in maintaining peace, stability and a rules-based order in their region, adding that the partnership has become more important as the region navigates an evolving and uncertain global environment.
• Marcos said the deeper ties would be "defined by wider pathways for cooperation, stronger political and defence cooperation, and closer linkages between the Filipino and Vietnamese people."
