Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa spent the summer keeping Republican Gov. Greg Abbott within arm's reach — never letting him lead by more than a few points.
However, two new polls disagree on whether that's still true, and the answer may decide how competitive the race really is.
A Sept. 15 poll from Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. showed that Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is leading his Democratic challenger, Gina Hinojosa, by 7 points, 48% to 41%, with 8% of voters undecided.
The Mason-Dixon had a 4-point margin of error, with Libertarian Pat Dixon at 1% and Independent Jenn Mack Raphoon at 2%. It surveyed 625 registered Texas voters Sept. 8-10 who said they are likely to vote in the November 2026 election.
The poll follows a Sept. 13 poll from SoCal Strategies that showed Abbott still in a strong position in his bid for a fourth term, leading Hinojosa 52% to 44%.

(NEXSTAR) – Roughly six dozen pet stores across 17 states are expected to close in the coming months in an attempt to restructure the business.
Tractor Supply announced in June that it would close about 75 of its more than 200 Petsense stores. In an earnings call, CEO Hal Lawton said Tractor Supply is focusing on directing "resources towards higher growth, higher return opportunities," CoStar reported. Lawton added that the Petsense stores set to close had reported negative cash flow.
"After that, we think we'll have a very strong, profitable Petsense business. It will work well with the broader pet ecosystem that we're building," he said.
At the time, the Petsense locations designated for closure were not available. That has since changed, as investment firm Gordon Brothers has listed more than 70 Petsense stores as available for lease. Gordon Brothers was also involved in Big Lots' bankruptcy.
Raising Cane's to open several new locations in August, with even more on the way

Former West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin refused to offer support for any self-described socialist candidates ahead of the midterm elections on Sunday's broadcast of CBS' "Face the Nation."
"No way," Manchin said when asked if he would ever support a socialist. "My God, no."
"Even if they have some good ideas?" host Margaret Brennan pressed.
"I support the good ideas," he said. "But how could you support some of the crazy stuff they're for?"
