A Florida "hero" mom died after using all her strength to keep her 4-year-old son above water when he fell into the St. Johns River, allowing rescuers to pull the boy to safety, authorities and her family said.
Nicole Grayson, 43, jumped into the river after her young son fell into the water at Ed Stone Park, west of DeLand, around 4 p.m. Saturday, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said the child had been playing with an unidentified object near a wooden fence along the river's edge when he dropped it over the barrier. The boy fell into the river while attempting to retrieve it.

SEOUL, July 11 (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping said China's commitment to its traditional friendship with North Korea would not change regardless of how the international situation evolves, according to letters exchanged with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and published by North Korean state media KCNA on Saturday.
Kim, in a letter to Xi, said bilateral friendship and cooperation had risen to a "new strategic level," KCNA reported.
North Korea's Premier Pak Thae Song arrived in Beijing on Friday for a three-day visit to attend an event marking the 65th anniversary of the neighbours' friendship treaty.
Xi travelled to Pyongyang last month for his first visit to North Korea in seven years, where he and Kim agreed to expand cooperation across politics, economy and culture.
The Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual ***** istance, signed on July 11, 1961, remains China's only active mutual defence pact.

(NewsNation) — A relative of the family suspected of child endangerment of 16 children has spoken out.
Ronnie Fletcher, uncle to 16 children rescued in Vinton County, Ohio, last week, said the rest of the family was "horrified."

"Horrified. Worried about the kids. It's hard to explain the action when you're distant family," Fletcher told NewsNation affiliate WOWK. "'What can I do to help?' That was the original reaction to it."
Fletcher referred to his family as distant because he said they were not close, though he said he is the children's uncle.

It is no big surprise that three-quarters of Democrats found the spectacle inappropriate, versus less than a quarter of Republicans.
Now some states are displaying their partisan colors over the Trump administration's Great American State Fair. At least 10 states led by Democratic governors have confirmed they won't officially participate in the event, which began on Thursday on the National Mall. An Oregon spokesman said the event was "shaping up to be a more partisan affair than originally presented."
But partisanship isn't the only force dividing the country over how we should be celebrating America's 250th. It turns out there is a gender divide as well.
Compared to men, women are less engaged with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. They also hold significantly different views on what events surrounding the historic occasion should emphasize: less founding fathers, more bringing people together.
Data from a national poll conducted by my university, Bowling Green State University, in conjunction with YouGov, makes the gender gap plain. We surveyed a sample of 1,200 U.S. registered voters in February. The poll has a 3.2 percent margin of error.

Its criticisms are backed by Pakistani actress Ayesha Omar, whose experiences, along with those of other women, are described in the findings.
One of the women at the centre of the report, whose name has been changed to Mahnoor to protect her privacy, explains that the images that changed her life were not nude. They were not **** ually explicit. They showed a woman exposing her bare shoulders and wearing Western clothing.
The 32-year-old from Pakistan told BBC Global Women that she returned to her childhood home when her marriage broke down. She hoped for comfort and support from her family, but instead, she and her young daughter were met with iciness.
It's been over a year and her father and brothers still have not spoken to her. Colleagues at work who she has known for years will not look her in the eye.
