The debate over the Ballon d'Or has exploded once again following the latest remarks from José Mourinho. The Portuguese coach, always direct and unfiltered, shared his own view of what this award really represents in modern football.
For "The Special One," the individual trophy should reward pure talent and not just winning ******* les: "For me, the Ballon d'Or has to go to those players who, when they retire, we miss forever. I miss Maradona, Nazario, Messi, Zizou..."
With his usual irony, Mourinho made it clear that if the criterion is based solely on a season's collective success, then the dugouts should be the real stars. He therefore sent a direct message about who should be lifting it in that scenario.
"You can't give the Ballon d'Or just because someone won the Champions League or the World Cup. If you want to reward the Champions League, give the Ballon d'Or to Luis Enrique. As for Spain, surely De La Fuente deserves it," the Portuguese manager said about PSG's and the national team's campaigns.
However, he insists that the best player on the planet plays in another league: "The best in the world doesn't have to be from PSG or Spain. There are two, three or four, and we know who they are". He also did not hesitate to take a swipe at the awards: "The Ballon d'Or has politics, and once politics gets involved, I don't like it as much."
